Review: R7-T1 - TLC - Build A Droid

Posted by Paul | August 29, 2009 at 02:36 PM ET |

Every now and again, Hasbro chooses some weird characters from Expanded Universe sources. And what makes things even more bizarre is when these characters don't have a visual reference and we have to take Hasbro's word. Research Droids Reviews looks at a Build A Droid that fits this bill. Click the Research Droids banner for our Research Droids Reviews archive index or the thumbnail for the direct review below! Don't forget you can also e-mail us your review requests and we'll be sure to add your choice to the queue.

Review: Mon Calamari Warrior - TLC - BD 14

Posted by Paul | August 28, 2009 at 05:41 AM ET |

Collectors love characters from the original Clone Wars microseries, especially if they have an OT familiarity about them. Today's entry of Research Droids Reviews looks at a species we have seen before but in a different light. Found! Vulture's Claw And Geonosis Assault Battle Packs!

Posted by Paul | August 27, 2009 at 06:24 PM ET |

We have found two new Battle Packs today at Toys R Us. They have reset the front of their stores and added some new product. Gone is GI Joe and in its place, Season 2 of The Clone Wars! Available in fair quantity were both Ambush On The Vulture's Claw and Geonosis Assault. What is interesting about the latter is that is labeled as part of The Clone Wars collection and not The Legacy Collection (based on Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones). Per Hasbro, only the animated figures would be branded with The Clone Wars logos, so this is clearly an error on their part. Otherwise, this set would have included two Oddball action figures. (We are sticking this set in the The Legacy Collection.) Click through to check out boxed photos of both! If you see this in the wild, pick it up! We've been told multiple times that it won't be around for long!

Review: Count Dooku (Holographic Transmission) - BD 21

Posted by Paul | August 26, 2009 at 10:09 AM ET |

Does a crystal blue action figure offer that much? Well, in the articulation department, it does if it isn't hyper-articulated, because we think less is more here. Today's Research Droids Reviews takes a look at our first holographic figure released in The Legacy Collection. First Look! Gentle Giant, Ltd. AT-AT Driver Mini Bust !

Posted by Paul | August 25, 2009 at 07:06 PM ET |

The AT-AT Driver mini bust has come and gone and has since been nearly impossible to locate. (And distributor warehouses have run dry of this product as well.) With a limited run of only 2500 pieces made, it is clear that Gentle Giant, Ltd. is significantly scaling back on production numbers. We have even heard that the upcoming mini busts are averaging as low as 1000 pieces each. It is a good time to reassess where you stand as a collector of Gentle Giant, Ltd. products, in order to get these marvelous collectibles into your home. We may need to return to the days of pre-ordering everything just to assure the opportunity to even purchase them! Keep checking back here as we will be keeping watch for these to see if they become more readily available again. And let us know if you find them in stock! Click through to check out this cool bust!

Review: Clone Trooper (Senate Security) - 2008 Exclusive

Posted by Paul | August 25, 2009 at 09:41 AM ET |

In a hobby where many things age terribly, what makes some things appear like they were dipped in the Fountain Of Youth? Today's Research Droids Reviews looks at a figure that looks a whole lot better now than he did when he was first released and ponders this very question! Click the Research Droids banner for our Research Droids Reviews archive index or the thumbnail for the direct review below! Don't forget you can also e-mail us your review requests and we'll be sure to add your choice to the queue.

First Look! 12 Inch Admiral Piett (Imperial Officer: Executor)

Posted by Paul | August 24, 2009 at 06:44 PM ET |

Our Admiral Piett (Imperial Officer: Executor) Sideshow Collectibles 12" figure was at our doorsteps when we got home from work today so for your viewing pleasure, we have snapped some quick shots for you to peruse. We were very surprised to find out that his uniform (fabric and plastic cap) has been changed to an army green (when all other photos have shown it a gray) color. We need to do more research to see how accurate this is, but while we do, check out the brand new photos and click through. We believe his likeness will impress you as much as it did us too.

First Look! (A Bit Late) TIE Fighter Pilot Mini Bust Variant!

Posted by Paul | August 24, 2009 at 06:39 PM ET |

We thank our secret sources who have given us the opportunity to get our hands on a variant TIE Fighter Pilot mini bust from Gentle Giant, Ltd. This extremely limited bust (700 pieces) is rarer than the Blackhole Stormtrooper and Clone Trooper Lieutenant mini busts. If you see this anywhere, grab it immediately. In the meantime, click through and check out some cool photos of this impressive piece!

Posted by Paul | August 24, 2009 at 10:06 AM ET |

What a joy it is to get a set with multiple figures in it that are unique and special in their own way. And if one of them is just plain brand new, well, it makes it all that much more special. Today's Research Droids Reviews takes a look at a very excellent Battle Packs set which was also one of the first released in The Legacy Collection. Review: Yuuzhan Vong/Kyle Katarn - LC - Comic Packs (3)

Posted by Paul | August 19, 2009 at 04:20 AM ET |

Do you remember the time when it was a big deal to get EU figures? (We mean a time when they weren't released more frequently than movie-based figures.) But 2009 is turning out to be another year for the EU action figures (and massively sized ones). Today's Research Droids Reviews checks out one of these "much-bigger-than-average" action figures, part of a two figure Comic Packs set. Review: Boba Fett/BL-17 - LC - Droid Factory (3 of 5)

Posted by Paul | August 17, 2009 at 09:18 AM ET |

Droids, one of the first expanded universe sources and part of the vintage era of figures, received its long overdue acknowledgement in the modern line with the recently released Droid Factory two packs. Review: Anakin Skywalker/Cortosis Battle Droid - (2 of 5)

Posted by Paul | August 16, 2009 at 06:38 AM ET |

The Droid Factory sets from WAL*MART are really pretty cool. Some are definitely weaker than others and Research Droids Reviews looks at one of the weaker ones today. While there is a cool storyline in this particular EU source, the figures don't really impress. WAL*MART Droid Factory Sets Hitting Profusely!

Posted by Paul | August 15, 2009 at 12:41 PM ET |

On our toy runs this morning, we have found the new WAL*MART exclusive sets hot and heavy! (Well, not so much as hot and heavy as frequent and in much less numbers tham the first group with each store having only one or two complete sets). Looks like Hasbro didn't cry "Wolf!" with their claims that the 2009 series was produced in lower numbers. But only time will tell. Check your local store for these but in the meantime, check out our reviews on General Grievous/CB-3D, Darth Maul/I-5YQ, Corran Horn/R2 Whistler, and Dark Trooper Phase III to see if these will be worthy additions to your own collection! Click thumbnail below to see a family photo of the new Droid Factory packaged sets.

Posted by Paul | August 15, 2009 at 06:05 AM ET |

The remote control droids debutted in Japan but finally made their way across the seas and into American collectors' hands. When The Clone Wars toy line became available in the summer of 2008, we all expected a ton of exclusives mixed in with the new product. Today's Research Droids Reviews looks at a basic figure exclusive available only at TARGET. Is Commander Fox a clever addition to the line, or was it a sly attempt by Hasbro to sell us a bridge? Review: Saleucami Trooper - TLC - BD 20

Posted by Paul | August 08, 2009 at 12:24 PM ET |

What is the difference between Commander Neyo and a Saleucami Trooper? If you're Hasbro, then the answer is battle-damage markings. Today's Research Droids Reviews looks at one of Neyo's finest, but let us approse you that there isn't much difference between the two of them! Review: Jodo Kast - TLC - BD 18

Posted by Paul | August 05, 2009 at 09:41 AM ET |

Found! New TCW Deluxe Figures! Two New Ones!

Posted by Paul | August 04, 2009 at 06:39 PM ET |

We have just found the [next] newest wave of Deluxe figures in the refreshed The Clone Wars line look! Finds yesterday and today include 212th Battalion Clone Troopers And Backpacks in addition to Turbo Tank Support Squad. We are not exactly sure why Hasbro didn't just double the number of troopers in each of these sets and release another clone trooper filled Battle Packs set for $23.99 instead of two for only $15.99. Such is life. Collectors will be interested to know that although the battle-damage wash has NOT returned, Hasbro is opting for a more eggshell like color and it does wonders for the figures! Click through for a larger image!

Review: Commander Faie/Quinlan Vos - TLC - Comic Packs

Posted by Paul | August 04, 2009 at 10:22 AM ET |

When the Expanded Universe tries extra hard to be seamless to the films, it makes that storyline that much more exciting. Today's Research Droids Reviews looks at a set of two figures from a great comic that worked very hard to tie itself into the films. Click the Research Droids banner for our Research Droids Reviews archive index or the thumbnail for the direct review below! Don't forget you can also e-mail us your review requests and we'll be sure to add your choice to the queue.

TLC/TCW BPs Hitting All-Time Low At Some WAL*MARTs

Posted by Paul | August 02, 2009 at 09:54 PM ET |

Some WAL*MART stores have begun clearancing out their stock of Battle Packs, which is a bit confusing since there are a few more coming down the pike. But is may be worth your while to check out the stores and see if you can get the Jabba's Palace or Scramble On Yavin sets for a lower price! Also of note, older sets have been showing up at some WAL*MART locations including Clone Attack On Coruscant and Jedi Training On Dagobah and these were on clearance as well. These have shipped in much less quantity and have been harder to find.

New Products Hitting TARGET Hard!

Posted by Paul | August 02, 2009 at 09:34 PM ET |

Make it a point to check out your local TARGET stores. Found today were many new products including the newest wave of Saga Legends (Luke X-wing, C-3PO, Han Solo (POTJ Bespin), and Chewbacca (Mynock Hunt), newest wave of Galactic Heroes (Echo and IG-86, new Kit Fisto & new Grievous, etc.), Transformers Crossovers, role-play, and a new The Clone Wars inspired large size remote control R2-D2!! Additionally, the massive Clone Turbo Tank ($99.99) and repainted ARC-170 ($64.99) were also in plentiful supply!

Review: Luke Skywalker - TLC - BD 30

Posted by Paul | August 02, 2009 at 04:19 PM ET |

The main Rebel hero of the Star Wars saga is the center of attention in today's Research Droids Reviews although with this take, he was trying to blend in with the Empire's finest soldiers. Click the Research Droids banner for our Research Droids Reviews archive index or the thumbnail for the direct review below! Don't forget you can also e-mail us your review requests and we'll be sure to add your choice to the queue.

Found! Legacy Collection Saga Legends Wave 2!

Posted by Paul | August 01, 2009 at 02:46 PM ET |

The next new wave Saga Legends figures have been found at both TARGET and Toys R Us this morning in Philadelphia. The bad news? Chewbacca may just be a figure you might want to pick up. He is based off of his appearance from The Empire Strikes Back Mynock Hunt scene and comes with a breath mask making him a "sort of" new figure. Additionally, his coloring looks a tad different too, but we will have to check our other samples before we confirm this. Han Solo looks like he belongs in a VH-1 "I Love The 2000's" episode and why this version of him was released in 2009 is beyond our comprehension. He looks nearly identical to the original. Both Plo Koon and Shock Trooper are straight repacks of the figures we've seen many times before. Click through to see the new photos!

Review: AT-TE Assault Squad - Battle Packs

Posted by Paul | August 01, 2009 at 01:58 PM ET |

Although we are now getting gypped with the inclusion of only four figures instead of five in their very popular Battle Packs sets, the one looked at in today's Research Droids Reviews almost makes you forget about this terribly flagrant act by Hasbro. Click the Research Droids banner for our Research Droids Reviews archive index or the thumbnail for the direct review below! Don't forget you can also e-mail us your review requests and we'll be sure to add your choice to the queue.
