Detailed Visual Analysis

Gamorrean Guard

General Analysis

Most would agree that the Gamorrean Guard has been a longstanding favorite Star Wars character for them. It certainly was for me. And by judging the performance of every collectible version Hasbro makes of it, the 1983 Star Wars character has left an indelible mark on the hearts of Star Wars collectors everywhere. This portly member of Jabba’s entourage stands out against so many wonderfully diverse aliens in Jabba’s palace. Their green skin, pig-like features and a Renaissance-inspired era of clothing make them an immediately likable and pertinent part of the Star Wars universe. As a kid, I was enthralled with their duties within Jabba’s palace. And I loved the scene when one of them became the rancor’s dinner. And then to see them also serve Jabba on The Khettana sail barge helped me to realize how important of a part they played in RETURN OF THE JEDI. When I received the action figure of Kenner’s Gamorrean Guard for Christmas 1983, it became one of my favorites. It still is. I thought Kenner did a fantastic job developing the character’s likeness into an action figure. I don’t think the figure was perfect for its time, but it sure looked fantastic for everyone I knew that grew up with me in school. He came with an ax, but we would learn later that they utilized multiple weapons in the film. I was particularly drawn to the card back art at a young age too. The Gamorrean Guard is drastically altered in color when compared to the onscreen character, but in retrospect, there is something endearing with what Kenner did to it to make it stand out and be more visible. When Hasbro released 2010’s THE VINTAGE COLLECTION Gamorrean Guard (VC21) figure, they updated the card back art to be more authentic. I am happy they did that, but it doesn’t affect my appreciation for the original 1983 Kenner release.
