Unleashed Battle Packs – Battle of Utapau:
After receiving the Battle of Utapau wave of Battle packs (the ones you see above) I have to say that I think that the general topics people were chatting about for this line seem to be exactly what we'll be getting...
First, let's get one thing out of the way. I don't think the fact that we have a new line of little figures is what bothers people about this line, I think putting a fantastic (maybe the best) Star Wars line Hasbro has ever produced on "hiatus" and then giving that name (Unleashed) to something that has nothing to do with original caused more uproar than anything...bad move...if they came up with another name then we all would have just said "Ho-hum" instead of "what the heck is going on here?!"
That aside I tried to look at these from the "Here's yet another line from Hasbro" approach and what you read below is as a fair review as I could give.
Packaging:
Very nice. The bubble is nice and deep so that they can actually package all 4 of the figures in somewhat of a dynamic diorama. The backdrop of fire and flame is as scene from Utapau so these cards are wave specific which is cool as well. Not a bad job and carded collectors will be very happy with the display of the packages.
The bubble wraps around the back and is taped just like we are used to seeing...however ripping these little guys out wont be that easy...they are mounted in plastic molds that take a pretty good grip on the feet/ base and that is tabbed below the cardboard "box" they are mounted on and twist tied as well.
Sculpts:
This seems to depend on the figure...some sculpts are very good while others are just OK...in this batch I don't think there is a really bad sculpt, although the Utapaun Warriors are questionable to me. Obi-Wan looks very good. We lose some detailing in the sculpts due to the scale of the figures which, due to the name of the product is very disappointing.
Paint Application:
Not bad at all for the scale...the applications seem neat and well thought out, but again, the figures lack "depth" because of the size of the figure and overall I would say the paint on them is just average.
Articulation:
Yes, some of these are articulated and I am not sure why since they are pinned down to their bases. In about half of the figures you'll find articulation either at the shoulders, waist or head...all basic joints and none of them have all three types. The most any has is 2 with head and waist articulation.
Other notes:
The plastic, once again, is very soft. Where this hurts the most is the lightsabers. Obi-Wan and Grievous have 5 warped lightsabers between the two of them...not a good score since they only have 5 lightsabers total! That's a failure rate of 100%
All but the Destroyer Droid come with little bases. Nice touch and it enables posing of the figures without having them fall over.
Playability:
There is simply not much to play with here. You can set them up on your desk or shelves and that's it. Except for a few arms and waits that move these poses are set in stone. There are diorama builders out there that will like these to give a sense of depth to their dioramas, and that just may be the best use for them.
Final Thoughts:
I started out hating this new line and gradually realized I just hated the name and I resolved to hold judgment until I saw them. Some of the on-line images even put thoughts into my head that these would not be all that bad.
Well, they are not the worst product ever, but they really don't hold my interest. For me, it's all about scale. These are about 2x the size of SW minis but have only a little more detail in sculpt and paint. Because of that when I see these lined up on my desk all I can think is..."oh, nice plastic"...they don't invoke any thoughts of action to me and I hate to say...are just a bit boring. I do think that the folks who really like the Minis and Attacktix (the figures, not the games that go with them) will like these a lot as well. Resentment of how the original Unleashed line was handled, the fact there is no game to go with them, and since they are out of scale with the rest of the SW universe I would tend to think that this line will have a very limited life span...
