Happy new year everyone! It’s already 2020 where I am. And here’s something to have fun with on January 1st after partying tonight! John Boyega is having a great time on Twitter. He tweeted this on December 31st:
Apparently John is not the biggest Reylo fan in the world! Grab some popcorn and head over to the thread on Twitter… some responses by Reylo fans are really angry. And John Boyega is apparently having lots of fun with them. His responses are classy and hilarious. Maybe he was a bit drunk already, maybe he was bored and was looking for some diversion, either way, have a great time reading the comments on Twitter!

The Mandalorian was certainly a very toyetic series. Now that the season finale is behind us it is time to look at what figures and vehicles Hasbro could make to make collectors happy! Be warned, this article is somewhat graphics heavy. Also, the list is completely scale-agnostic, so unless noted otherwise all things mentioned here are for both TVC and TBS, no need to debate about scales about here! Now click through for an extensive list of Mandalorian characters and vehicles I think would make for great toys!
The Emperor Palpatine (Electronic)/Royal Guard Action Collection set gave us our first 12″ Emperor’s Royal Guard figure, but did you know Hasbro made it by using most of the Emperor Palpatine Action Collection figure? Again, I don’t get it. The Rise Of Skywalker is barely over a week old now. The attention span for movie marketing is nonexistent. I neglected to post yesterday that TARGET was running a Buy Two Get One Free special on all toys (it has now expired). I managed to get three of the Cave Of Evil three-packs for a decent price. But, I also noticed that TARGET has placed its exclusive Supreme Leader Snoke & Rey Galaxy Of Adventures set and The Black Series [Phase III] C-3PO & Babu Frik on clearance. Also of note, the Cave Of Evil Special Action Figure Set is still $39.99.

The final chapter in the Skywalker Saga has only been in theaters for slightly over a week, and there is NOTHING on store shelves to support The Rise Of Skywalker. It feels like we’ve been through this too many times since 2015. And what worries me more is that so many online retailers have plenty of stuff on order claiming it is arriving soon. So, will we go from a barren wasteland to overstock in a short period of time? Click the image below to see what is representative across ALL retailers in my area.

I just got back home from Christmas vacation to a plethora of packages from online purchases. I have to admit that I have had GREAT luck with Walmart the past couple of months, but this delivery was a setback. Click the image below to see how a sale TVC Luke Skywalker (Yavin Ceremony) arrived. What’s odd is that I added to my cart as an extra to meet minimum FREE delivery requirements, yet, my main order and this arrived in two separate boxes. That’s penny-wise, pound foolish, friends.

Ha! Ha! The Rise Of Skywalker is doing very well at the box office, holding stronger than the art-house project, The Last Jedi. This serves as proof that word is getting out that Disney produced a film for longtime Star Wars fans and not a film that subverts expectations (at least in my mind anyway). Movie Web has the full story.
Alrighty then! This week in Star Wars was great! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. My wife gifted me a one-of-a kind action figure item, and I’m super excited to add it to the collection! Well, well, well. It looks like Forbes has someone aside from Scott Mendelson to offer an opinion about The Rise of Skywalker (thank the Maker)! Eric Cain, who oversees game segments on Forbes, gives the film high praise and probably offers proof that the film is more like a live-action video game than anything else. Check it out! Special thanks to my best friend jerk, Chris S. for the alert.

UPDATE: the estimates for the 3-day opening weekend are in! The Rise of Skywalker has a $175.5 million opening weekend which is at the lowest end of industry estimates and is the upper limit of my previously posted own estimates based on YouTube trailer views!
While this is a very strong opening, the question is if Disney will be ultimately happy with the lowest opening for any of the sequel trilogy movies. The Last Jedi made about $45 million more on its opening weekend in 2017. Click through for the original story!

It seems that some media outlets and some fans are trying to blame The Rise of Skywalker’s mixed results on fans, and here the “whiny” Original Trilogy fans, also members of the “Fandom Menace”, all the fans who loudly complained about the treatment of Original Trilogy characters in the sequels. They prevented the other fans from enjoying the “new” Star Wars, and in the end convinced Lucasfilm to try to appease the old fanbase with The Rise of Skywalker.
But is that so? I disagree. Why? Click through for a discussion, a discussion about fandom and why blaming certain parts of fandom is dishonest and trying to deflect from the actual issues. Before we will probably talk for a while about The Rise of Skywalker, I think it’s the perfect time now to look back at 2019. What is your favorite Star Wars (action) figure released in 2019? And by that I mean an actual figure, including Funko Pop!, Hot Toys, Black Series, The Vintage Collection, SH.Figuarts or anything else that is a figure.
That excludes LEGO, playsets, vehicles and the Barge. I thought it would be boring if 90% of people or so said “The Barge”, which is most certainly one of the best Star Wars toys ever made, but it’s not an action figure. So let’s talk about figures! Please try to pick only one figure, even if it may be difficult to choose. And please try to post a photo as well! And maybe you tell us why this figure in particular is your most favorite of 2019.
‘Tis the season to swap figure parts. Look at what this unscrupulous collector did to the Luke Skywalker (Ceremonial Outfit) figure. Special thanks to JTA reader Rogue1138 for the report and image.

The LA Times released a lengthy article about Kathleen Kennedy and Star Wars on Sunday. Of particular interest is the following section, which talks about the potential future of Star Wars on the big screen:
While the “Skywalker” saga is ending, the company won’t abandon the characters created in the most recent trilogy. Additionally, she said, the plan is to move beyond trilogies, which can be restricting.
“I think it gives us a more open-ended view of storytelling and doesn’t lock us into this three-act structure,” she said. “We’re not going to have some finite number and fit it into a box. We’re really going to let the story dictate that.”
So what could that mean? Click through for a discussion!

The Black Series [Phase III] 6″ line is flourishing, but that doesn’t mean that Hasbro isn’t still actively playing catch up as we speak. It is time to become more active and show Hasbro that there is support and love for the 3.75″ line. Let’s no longer wait for Hasbro to announce the product but get involved! Kenner started it all in the 70s with the 3.75″ line, and this is still what most fans want to collect. However, we see a lot of re-issues, but there could be done a lot more to keep capturing the magic of Star Wars and keep collecting alive.
Rogue One is one of the fans’ favorite movies but didn’t see too much love yet in terms of products. General Merrick participated in the Alliance’s acquisition of the Galactic Empire’s plans to their ultimate weapon, the Death Star, in the Battle of Scarif, flying as leader of Blue Squadron in a T-65B X-Wing Starfighter.
The blue squadron is missing in the lineup of Hasbro’s X-Wings. Show your support and sign this petition to have Hasbro produce Merrick and his X-Wing in The Vintage Collection line. Hasbro should produce Merrick in The Vintage Collection packaging, and they should either include him carded with the X-Wing as they did with Jabba’s Palace, or produce both separately boxed and carded.
May the Force be with us.

We all knew this was coming, and here they all are! From The Black Series to plushies, to mugs, Baby Yoda merchandise is here. Check out everything over at Entertainment Earth!
A brand new The Rise of Skywalker trailer was just posted on the official Star Wars Facebook page, it includes an entirely new scene from near the beginning of the movie, plus a few other shots, but the new scene is what people will talk about.
It not only confirms the Reddit leaks even more, it also confirms fan theories. If you want to know more, click through. If not, stay away and buy some Baby Yoda merchandise instead!
Dork Side Toys just released their new newsletter and out of nowhere they announced new Baby Yoda toys from Hasbro! Click through for all the details and photos!
We have another new nostalgia-filled special look at The Rise of Skywalker, courtesy of Amazon, which contains a few new scenes and some old BTS footage of the Original Trilogy. There is one scene in there that was pretty nice to see concerning some old friends. While there are no serious spoilers beyond what has been shown in the trailers you may want to skip this one if you’ve been avoiding those. The video is actually a “secret” and you have to search #TheRiseOfSkywalker on Amazon or by telling Alexa “Alexa, The Force will be with you always, but here’s the link so you don’t have to do that. You’ve been warned, so click here to take a look!
In four days The Rise of Skywalker has its world premiere in Hollywood. Has it really only been four short years since The Force Awakens was released? And now the “Skywalker Saga” comes to a close. A saga 42 years in the making.
I think it’s the perfect time to not just look back or look forward, but to also talk about how we feel about Star Wars as a whole now. And by that I don’t just mean the movies, I mean everything. The movies, the toys, games, books and comics. How do you feel about Star Wars as a whole, in 2019, one week before the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga opens in theaters. Are you happy? Do you no longer really care? Are you sad? Are you angry? How much does Star Wars mean to you still? Are you looking forward to new content? New toys? New shows? New movies? New books? Has something changed about how you feel about Star Wars in the past few years? Where do you see Star Wars in another 5 or 10 years? Do you think you will still be a part of fandom then?
So let’s all come together and share our thoughts and feelings about Star Wars. What it still means to us and what it will mean to us in the future. And remember, there is no “right” or “wrong” feeling, what you feel is what you feel.
Megalopolis toys posted an ad on their Facebook page about a week ago. It was just shared in the Vintage Collection group on Facebook by Jeffery H, so thanks to him for bringing it to our attention. This is why so many of us love The Vintage Collection! Click here to watch the video.
The D-O/R5-2JE/R6-LE5/R2-SHP Droid Factory four-pack concentrates on four new droids from Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker. The following story is NOT fake news! Burger King Germany has a really weird Star Wars promotion going on (which is apparently not supported by Disney). You can get a free Whopper if you are willing to open the (German) Burger King app, click a button to get a spoiler for The Rise of Skywalker and then read it out loud. Actually, the app has voice recognition and will give you a coupon if you read it out loud at home so you don’t really have to read it out loud to a BK employee behind the counter as the video suggests.
Burger King Germany even has a video on their official YouTube channel that explains it all. However, the restaurant you see, with the extremely spoilery menu names, was specifically made to look like that for the video. So it’s only that one restaurant that had the spoilery menu names. Even the food had spoilers, the fries, the straws, the packaging, the shirts worn by employees. All the normal Burger King restaurants still look the same, however! And it’s apparent that Burger King got all their leaks from JediPaxis on Reddit. What a weird world we live in! You can watch the extremely spoilery (if you can read German!) Burger King video here! Don’t click it if you can read German and want to know nothing! Has anything like that ever happened anywhere before? Is this peak spoiler culture? To quote McDonald’s: “I’m lovin’ it”.
In anticipation of the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, InsuretheGap.com committed themselves to working out the cost to insure the famous ships from the films. Turns out, it would cost Han Solo a lot more than anticipated to insure the Millennium Falcon!
All 8 ships have been given a profile, considering weight, size and other factors. Combined with pilot/owner’s profiles, InsuretheGap.com was able to create an algorithm to work out the annual insurance cost.

Some of the finest 12″ figures produced by Hasbro came early in the Kenner/Hasbro Star Wars line. Figrin D’an (With Kloo Horn) (Cantina Band) is an example of Hasbro’s best. Estimating box office has become very important in Hollywood. They usually know a few weeks or even months in advance how a movie is going to perform. Various sources are used, social media, trend data and trailer views, to name the most common sources. JTA regular 80sRobot posted a few estimates of his own in the comments recently, based solely on YouTube trailer views. A recent study by a tracking company has found that YouTube trailer views are a predictor for box office success, to a certain degree, so this seems like a valid approach. Based on this I thought it might be fun to see if we here on JTA can make our own estimates about the success of The Rise of Skywalker at the box office and took a closer look at YouTube trailer views and box office success. Spoiler: The Rise of Skywalker will most likely perform worse than The Last Jedi. Why? Click through to find out!

After discovering all of the Walmart discounts today, I checked out a few products to check out the reviews. I couldn’t help but notice that there is a disclaimer on most reviews that notes that the reviews were written when the customer was visiting Hasbro and that the “review was collected as part of a promotion.” Also of note, the reviews are very general and not too specific. Does anyone else find this odd? Is this a new technique of which I am not aware? Read through them all. Many have a weird voice/tone to them.
Well, after the $10 Five Below finds, the $16.99 Kids Warehouse Discount, and now Ollie’s $19.99 special, (as well as multiple unmentioned flash-sales on Amazon), I think it’s safe to say that The Vintage Collection Imperial Combat Assault Tank was a colossal failure. Even if it’s time to discount the vehicle in the line, there shouldn’t be this many units available for these give-away prices. Hey, if we can rip The Black Series [Phase III] First Order Elite TIE Fighter 6″ vehicle a new one, we should be able to do it for a TVC item too. Special thanks to JTA reader Ed. D. for the latest Ollie’s news.
P.S. I do want to be COMPLETELY transparent and state I never saw this vehicle at retail ONCE. So, maybe it’s NOT a great comparison to the 6″ First Order Elite TIE Fighter. At least the latter was found EVERYWHERE before it hit clearance EVERYWHERE.
If you’ve been holding off on grabbing the Mystery Box or couldn’t find it on the shelves alone, the Black Series 6″ Target Exclusive First Order Elite Snowtrooper is now in stock online! I had a pretty good week when it comes to collecting. I took a trip an hour south to Tucson, AZ, and went to a wonderful swap meet. Some of my favorite vendors had vamoosed, unfortunately, but there were still a couple toy vendors with decent Star Wars merchandise. I also watched A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, which marks the first time my son has gotten to watch the original trilogy (although he’s 2 so he ran around for a lot of it and went to be 3/4ths of the way through each movie, but boy did he like R2-D2!). In any case, click here to see a few photos of this week’s collecting finds!

John Boyega is one of the few Star Wars main actors who is still on social media. And a while ago he promised fans that he would absolutely speak his mind once all is said and done. It seems John is beginning to make good on his promise, because in a lengthy interview with Hypebeast he not only talks about his various upcoming projects, but also how he feels about Star Wars. So click through for a few quotes. It’s certainly always interesting to hear what one of the main actors thinks of the sequels (so far).

We’re only a few days away from The Rise of Skywalker. I will actually see the movie next week on Wednesday, the movie opens in Europe on December 18th, only two days after the world premiere in Hollywood. Expect more leaks to come and confirmation of whether or not they are actually true very soon. And I want to discuss one such leak, even if not technically speaking a leak, today.
Dan Mindel, director of photography for The Rise of Skywalker, posted a photo on his Instagram, which was deleted a short time later. And this photo may contain some very crucial information. And the fact that the photo was deleted a short time later may actually confirm that the photo was never supposed to be posted, because it’s very spoilery. Anyone who wants to see it and discuss leaks in general, please click through! Anyone else should avoid this article! You will be spoiled if you click through!

Although The Vintage Collection Boba Fett periodically shows out of stock at Walmart online, it also frequently shown as available from a third-party seller (for a VERY EXPENSIVE PRICE; usually around $36+). However, if you look for the other buying options, you’ll also see it’s available from Walmart too. If you click Compare Sellers (including Walmart), you then have an option to add Boba Fett to your cart for the $12.93 MSRP! It worked for me and I received mine today. (I wanted to ensure it worked before posting.) I could have ordered a dozen if I wanted to, but only when it shows in stock from a third party seller. Best of luck! As of the time of this post, you can order the figure.
Update: Looks like it’s back in stock again when you click the ‘Compare’ option.

Hasbro, you have treated 6″ collectors very well with the four-decade celebration of 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope. The collection of vintage Kenner-inspired card backs was an interesting take for The Black Series line, but it worked out well because collectors bought them up. Sadly, you provided 3.75″ super-articulated collectors with a paltry line of 3.75″ Titanium figures that were both terrible and a slap in the face. So, can we ask you to do something special for us for 2020, please? (more….)
As everyone knows the Star Wars Special Editions are the only available versions of the movies. The new 4K versions on Disney+ have tweaked things a bit, improved color grading, there are some minor edits here and there, but they too are the Special Editions of course. Which is just what George Lucas intended. He considers the Special Edition the ultimate edition, the version fans should see. However, many old fans would also like to see the original version of the movies they saw in cinemas back in 1977, 1980 and 1983. The last time these versions were released was in 2006 as mediocre DVD transfers.
However, you can watch the original version of Star Wars even today. Even in 4k! In this article I want to talk about how you could, in theory, watch the original, unadulterated Star Wars movie. In this article I will tell you about two fanmade edits of Star Wars and I will show you several screenshots, so you can see how they differ from each other and the Blu-Ray. However, there are several important caveats. I will address them after the jump! So click through for a trip back in time, when “A New Hope” was simply “Star Wars”.
That’s right! Chapter 5 of The Mandalorian takes the hero and Baby Yoda to Tatooine (we knew that from the posters and various trailers already). So click through for a few comparisons and to see how faitfhfully the show managed to recreate the planet. Very mild spoilers may apply, so people who don’t like even the mildest of spoilers (basically, just set pieces from the first 5 minutes or so from the show) should only click through once they have seen the episode! Get used to this one folks! It’s time to start the Baby Yoda merchandise train! Walmart.com has the new Pop! figures up for pre-order, and the newly announced plush toy does show up in the search results, but when you click on it the page doesn’t yet work. Thanks to JTA reader Craig for the alert! Update: The Plush Yoda pre-order is now also live on Walmart.com.
Update: Entertainment Earth has pre-order pages ready to go too:
Mattel will release a “Baby Yoda” plush doll with vinyl head on June 1st 2020. Price will be $24.99. The toy looks just as adorable as the character. And in my opinion this Mattel “Baby Yoda” is superior to the very stylized Funko Pop version – and even cheaper.
However, all of that raises the question if the fact that Mattel is making “Baby Yoda” could be a sign of things to come.
A quick reminder: the Hasbro Star Wars license expires in late 2020. And we’ve had no news at all regarding a license renewal or extension, which is highly unusual, because previously these extensions were announced years in advance.
That being said, it’s not unusual that various other companies are making Star Wars plush dolls. Porgs were made by a number of companies, for example. So it may well be that Hasbro has an electronic “Baby Yoda” toy in the works that can move and make sounds, just like the electronic Porg made by them. It’s therefore not about the fact that Hasbro has no exclusive license to make Star Wars plush toys. But that Mattel is making “Baby Yoda” is certainly interesting, because they didn’t make any plush Porgs back in 2017. So maybe Mattel wants a bigger slice of the Star Wars merchandise pie. And perhaps they want even more.

Entertainment Earth has plenty of Cyber Monday goodness to check out, including:
A few hours ago the official Star Wars YouTube Channel livestreamed a Q&A session with most of the principal actors and director JJ Abrams, as usual Adam Driver was not present. And then the interviewer asked the ultimate question: “What was your reaction to the end of the movie?” If you want to avoid potential spoilers you should probably stay away from this article. If you’re quick, tunghori has once again listed The Vintage Collection. Yoda from the TARGET exclusive Cave Of Evil Special Action Figure Set. This might be the last bite at the apple for this Yoda if you’re not willing to drop $50 for the set. It’s the only figure with noteworthy changes.
This was inevitable. Fans have been asking for Baby Yoda merchandise ever since the first episode of The Mandalorian was released. And as usual, Funko will be the first to release something, it seems. Funko themselves posted a teaser on their Twitter, but a photo of the actual toy also leaked on Instagram. A Reddit user posted a screenshot of several entries in Target’s database showing two different Baby Yodas: a 10 inch and most likely a regular 6 inch version which both look the same. Price is $29.99 and $8.99 respectively. Expect Baby Yoda early in 2020. Now we wonder when Hasbro and/or Disney will release something, either an action figure with a Baby Yoda accessory or a lifesize doll. Will you get the Funko Pop version?

Even though this is in no way related to Star Wars, it may still be of interest to some Star Wars fans how Rian Johnson’s new movie “Knives Out” is doing at the box office. According to estimates by Box Office Mojo, “Knives Out” will have a $27 million opening weekend. Which makes “Knives Out” the Rian Johnson movie with the best opening weekend (other than “The Last Jedi”).
“Looper” made $20 million in 2012 and the previous two movies “Brothers Bloom” and “Brick” never had a wide release. If we look at ticket sales it’s about $2.6 million tickets in 2012 for “Looper” vs. $2.9 million tickets in 2019 for “Knives Out”. “Knives Out” will probably make more money than “Looper” in the US, however, “Looper” made most of its money overseas, $176 million in total. “Knives Out” is currently at $70 million worldwide, but there are no box office reports from most territories yet.
Fun fact: “Knives Out” had a better opening in China with $13.5 million than “Solo”, which only made $9.5 million.
