Before you immediately skip this article because Funko does not interest you: you want to read this. Because Funko’s brand new earnings report for 2022 potentially tells us a LOT about Hasbro and Star Wars. And how Hasbro may try to dazzle and misdirect people with lots of smoke, mirrors and glitter when they talk about “record sales” for Marvel and “sales growth” for Star Wars. You certainly remember Hasbro’s proud announcement about these things? Well, Funko’s earnings report sheds some light on what “record sales” and “sales growth” can actually mean…
We don’t talk about Funko all that much here, because Funko Pops apparently appeal to a different demographic and not the middle-aged somewhat grumpy collector who got his or her first Star Wars action figure in 1978. However, Funko’s recently released 2022 results shed some very interesting light on the collectible market and the challenges they are facing. In fact, it may (and certainly does) even provide some context for Hasbro’s earnings report from a while ago. Because what is happening over at Funko is almost certainly also happening at Hasbro.
And the headline gives you a good indication of what is currently going on at Funko. It’s nothing good. And they had record sales even, their sales in 2022 are up by 29%, yet that all means very little… Click through for the full story!

Funko and Hasbro both released their earnings reports for the 3rd quarter a short while ago. And things continue to look pretty good for Star Wars toys. After years of dwindling sales Star Wars toys are more in demand again. This trend started in 2019 and The Mandalorian turns out to be one of the key factors behind that new success. This has been revealed earlier this week (on Yahoo Entertainment), but I’d still like to point out that once again Funko is not only the first to market, but also the first and only company to even have the figures at all: Jedi Training Luke and Leia from the The Rise of Skywalker flashback scene. Opinions about the movie may be divided, but almost anyone would agree that the third sequel was the most toyetic of the three episodes. And even though sequel based merchandise does not necessarily sell like hot cakes, I would think that OT based figures from a flashback scene might find a lot of fans, no matter the scale, of course this could be released in both lines. Who wouldn’t want a Jedi Knight Leia and Jedi Master Luke in their prime on the shelf?
Would you want these two figures at least from The Rise of Skywalker, or do you think Hasbro should forget the sequels altogether and focus on The Mandalorian and missing OT/PT figures instead, provided there are only so many release slots and the number of figures each year is rather limited?

Walmart.com has the new Pop! figures up for pre-order, and the newly announced plush toy does show up in the search results, but when you click on it the page doesn’t yet work. JTA doesn’t usually cover much Funko Pop! news, but outside of the TVC and TBS bubble Funko is doing incredibly well (more on that in an upcoming article). And now Amazon has an all new Funko Pop! Episode IV Millennium Falcon with Episode IV Han Solo on pre-order! The set will only be available for Amazon Prime members. Despite that it is currently the best selling toy on Amazon. Funko Pop, while not something that is much discussed here on JTA, is a juggernaut on the collectibles market, that is, figures or figurines that are aimed at adults, think TVC and Black Series. And now some interesting data has been released that sheds some light on how Star Wars and other popular licenses perform in the Funko line-up of both POP! vinyl figures and 3.75 inch action figures.
