Name: Mace Windu
Homeworld: Haruun Kal
Born: 72 BBY
Species: Human
Height: 1.88 meters
Affiliation: Jedi Order
Second only to Jedi Grand Master Yoda, Mace Windu's wisdom, strength and tactical expertise made him a perfect candidate for the Jedi High Council. The remarkably Force-sensitive Windu not only pioneered the modern use of Vaapad, the lost seventh form of lightsaber combat, he was also one of few Jedi able to utilize the devastating Force Crush without succumbing to the dark side.
Diplomatic in every sense of the word, Mace Windu's affinity for the Force allowed him to sense the shatterpoints in people, places and situations. This afforded him insight into the machinations of then-Chancellor Palpatine, though Windu was not able to devise the true nature of the tyrant's involvement with Anakin Skywalker. After finally confronting the Sith Lord, it was eventually young Skywalker that turned the tide of battle and led to Windu's demise at Palpatine's hands. His death marked the beginning of the Great Jedi Purge.
There is always at least one star that shines extra brightly in any given line of Star Wars collectibles. For the Ultimate Quarter Scale line, that award may just have to go to Mace Windu. Mace Windu is a fan favorite Star Wars character. He looks exactly the same in every single film in the Prequel Trilogy which makes things extra easy for Star Wars licenses, he knows how to wield a lightsaber, and his role in the Star Wars saga was pivotal in many ways. Now Diamond Select Toys makes it their mission to release the great Mace Windu in this supersized Ultimate Quarter Scale line and we couldn’t be happier with the final results. In one of their blog entries, DST admitted that it was hard coming up with some cool accessories for the Jedi characters since they often don’t hold much than a lightsaber. So they combed the films and thought that the Jedi training screen from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace would be an incredibly unique addition to an already spectacular figure. We agree. Additional accessories like this not only makes the Mace Windu Ultimate Quarter Scale figure scene specific for every film in the Prequel Trilogy, it adds the perfect amount of versatility to an already spectacular figure.
Whether attempting to weed out potential Padawans from the Jedi Order or fighting Separatist battle droids on the dusty Geonosis planet, Mace WIndu is perhaps one of the most focused and confident Jedi characters the Star Wars films have ever seen. Perhaps most of that can be attributed to the phenomenal acting skills Samuel Jackson brought to the character, but there is very little to argue about how Mace was such an important part of the storylines in the Star Wars saga; especially Attack Of The Clones and Revenge Of The Sith. Diamond Select Toys has miraculously captured all of the wonderful traits of Mace Windu via a thoughtful and contemplative expression of the well-designed portrait. And then they supported it with an authentic multi-layered costume that looks ripped right out of the film. Keep in mind that this line is meant to bring affordable collectibles to the marketplace, but you’ll probably feel more like you robbed because of how much quality assurance the piece possesses. We’re so thrilled to have a Mace Windu figure in this scale. And what make that even more powerful is that this is essentially an overgrown action figure. Its generous articulation makes it more fun than a Premium Format Figure and a fraction of their cost.
The Ultimate Quarter Scale figure line lacks the consistency that Sideshow Collectibles constantly brings to the collector market. But it seems that Diamond Select Toys has a much smaller learning curve to master when compared to the high-end collectibles delivered by Sideshow. Diamond Select has one body type for all of their figures. And they’re committed to keeping the cost the same whether it’s a character like Anakin Skywalker or a suited Darth Vader or Boba Fett. That being said, Mace Windu falls into place perfectly in the Ultimate Quarter Scale line. His likeness is excellent, he’s well outfitted and he is affordable; especially for the amount of solid plastic and soft-goods Diamond Select Toys has manufactured to create this fine collectible. We have to admit that we aren’t a fan of the electronic phrases from the films. Talking figures never did it for us and it doesn’t help the UQS line at all in our opinion. But maybe the goal here was something extra fun for the kids to enjoy. But know very well that adult collectors should have plenty to appreciate here with Mace Windu in spite of his play features. This is a very finely executed Ultimate Quarter Scale figure.
