What is the intrigue with the green pig They are always a favorite with Star Wars fans and collectors and it appears that it’s impossible to tire of them no matter the collectible format type that gets announced and released of them. This character is only one of the reasons why the Original Trilogy supersedes the Prequel Trilogy for having a last impact on viewers. No reliance on modern computer technology, George Lucas had to build real life costumes in a very authentic manner to make them believable in the films. And what a success the Gamorrean Guard (as well as so many other characters) has become. Thankfully, the Gamorrean Guard is a character that many licensees are eager to produce for their respective collectible lines. Perhaps the interest in this character doesn’t wane because of its familiarity in our universe. There are pigs on earth and we tend to love those too.
On screen, these green guards indirectly ham it up in front of the camera laughing as one of their own gets devoured by the rancor in the pit below. (We should find that a bit sickening, right?) And they also provide a protective defense to prevent intruders from entering Jabba’s quarters, unless of course you’re Luke Skywalker utilizing the Force at will. When it comes to Gentle Giant Ltd.’s Mini Bust interpretation of this character, he’s a little more reserved and actually appears “at ease” leaning against his vibro axe. The piece is done very well. Aside from a few small issues we feel that it’s more than a fair resemblance to the onscreen character. The Mini Bust is rotund, solid and weighty, something all collectors of the Mini Bust line love to see. Because this is a high-end collectibles line, it’s nice to “feel” the value of what you spent in your hands. Limited to 4000 pieces, the Gamorrean Guard Mini Bust should make it to everyone who wants one unless some people have decided to army build them which we find a bit unlikely.
The first thing we noticed was his skin color. We could be off with our assessment, but we think that the artists chose a shade of green that isn’t entirely accurate. But we’re not even sure how to describe how this green is off because it is pretty close, but enough to make you think something isn’t entirely perfect with it. That may sound a little too uptight, but we think it’s worth mentioning. If you turn the Mini Bust upside down (and you can see this in one of our photos in the gallery) you’ll notice that the undersides of the hands are colored beige like how human flesh would look like. We found this to be a bit interesting and don’t recall being aware of this detail in the film. His costume looks superb. If would have been cool for Gentle Giant Ltd. to have added some real soft-goods to the piece to help make it look more realistic but that isn’t the format for Mini Busts. We also wished his head wasn’t hanging down as it’s hard to make “eye contact” with the piece unless angled upwards. Other than that, the Gamorrean Guard Mini Bust is a gem.
