The Kenner Star Wars action figure line changed as we knew it in 1983 with the release of Return Of The Jedi in theaters. For the first time ever, main characters came with disguises and left an indelible mark on our childhood. The added feature of removable helmets is a detail that has permeated so strongly that it’s lasted into our adulthood collecting days. Hasbro has been in tune with how important this type of accessory is for an action feature. Sadly, Hasbro has unfortunately taken the concept of “removable helmets” much too far in the neo classic era. Did you really ever expect to see characters like Stormtroopers and Boba Fett come with removable helmets? We didn’t either. But the original characters that came this way in the Kenner line have become the premier collectibles of our collections. Take for instance Lando Calrissian (In Skiff Guard Disguise). This was arguably one of his best outfits in the Original Trilogy and all of the collectible formats made of him donning this outfit have came out incredibly well. This can be said of Gentle Giant Ltd.’s Mini Bust interpretation too.
Some of Gentle Giant Ltd.’s best Mini Bust work was released between 2004 and 2006. The artists who sculpted the pieces were leaders in the industry and the attention to detail was unprecedented. Lando Calrissian (In Skiff Guard Disguise) is another hit out of the ballpark and it goes without saying that it will be hard for Gentle Giant to make a better version of Lando in any outfit. As all Star Wars fans know, the outfits of Jabba’s henchmen are very complex in a primitive sort of way. Sure, there are lots of Native American inspired details in the costumes, but this makes small details like teeth, tusks, metal plates and weaponry all the more difficult to replicate in polystone media. Gentle Giant Ltd. however has proven that they’re unstoppable in creating beautiful Star Wars high-end products with exactness and precision. Not only is Lando Calrissian (In Skiff Guard Disguise) a remarkable piece, it’s a wonderful complement to the other characters from Episode VI that have already been produced for this line. This pieces will make you pine for more characters from Jabba’s palace.
Lando Calrissian (In Skiff Guard Disguise) is beautifully designed. We inspected the paint job from head to toe and couldn’t find one inconsistency in the color palette chosen for him. We tend to be sticklers when it comes to a character’s likeness, so we feel confident with our assertion that the likeness to Billy Dee Williams is extremely close and accurate. The helmet helps to obscure much of his facial details, but his eyes are clearly visible and when you look into them you recognize the actor that played this character. If we had one complaint, we aren’t thrilled that Lando leans toward the side a little bit. It certainly isn’t a deal breaker by any means, but it does make it seem like he’s been freeze-framed in the middle of an action. His force pike is especially impressive and has been perfectly replicated from the prop in the film. Multiple silver details have been used to accent its shape and contour and he is holding it in a very believable position that is reminiscent of scenes from the Battle of Carkoon. Lando Calrissian (In Skiff Guard Disguise) is another excellent release from Gentle Giant Ltd. and it’s one of the finest pieces they have produced. It would make a wonderful addition to your Mini Bust collection.
