Like all Duros, Ellorrs Madak is a natural wanderer who is at home wherever his travels take him. Although Duros tend to be a peaceful species, the Empire's restrictive trade practices prompt Madak to leave his government job and become a freelance flight instructor and occasional smuggler.
In the summer of 2000, Hasbro hosted the very first Fans’ Choice figure poll where Star Wars collectors could decide on the next Star Wars action figure to be released by Hasbro. The competition was intense, but Ellorrs Madak rang in as champion much to the delight of the collecting community. His contenders included Amanaman, Bom Vimdim (the last “n” spelled with an “m” accidentally), Eeth Koth and Teemto Pagalies. Interestingly enough, by the time the Power Of The Jedi line had concluded, 60% of these poll choices ended up in the POTJ collection. (Editor’s Note: Teemto Pagalies (Pod Racer) ('02 #46) was eventually released in the Star Wars “Saga” line in 2002 and Bom Vimdin (Cantina Patron) (VC53) was released over a decade later in The Vintage Collection.) While many fans expressed chagrin over the defeat of Amanaman, Hasbro quickly assured us that he was on tap for the Deluxe line as Amanaman (With Salacious Crumb). Fears relieved! We don’t want to steal Ellorrs Madak’s thunder by feeling sorrow for the candidates that lost, so let’s get right down to business and express why he is such a wonderful action figure and an asset to the basic figure line.
Ellorrs Madak, like so many other figures in the Power Of The Jedi line, is an action figure that you have to judge and rank by its sculpt and not by its articulation. The Power Of The Jedi line was all about bringing as many never-before-released action figures to the forefront of collecting, but they redeveloped their approach to make proportion and scale a huge priority over articulation. As a result, Ellorrs Madak looks like a figure that will not age over time. That doesn’t mean collectors won’t desire more articulation at some point, but as is, Ellorrs Madak will absolutely stand the test of time. He comes with a swivel head, two swivel shoulders, a swivel waist, and two swivel hips. So you’d be right in your assessment that the figure isn’t capable of doing much. But you have to look deeper into this one. As a much requested fan picked action figure, Ellorrs Madak, the first Duros in the Star Wars basic figure line, Hasbro decided to make the highest quality action figure for Star Wars collectors and that meant that articulation would have to take a backseat to a wonderful sculpt and incredible paint job. And that’s exactly what Hasbro did.
Ellorrs Madak looks stunning. He is lean and slender and has a body design that we haven’t seen before on previous cantina action figure. Sure, he has the typically space suit, but his body type is so thin and reminiscent of a Roswell alien that it emphasizes the “other world” appearance/attitude this character brought to A New Hope. The head and hands are sculpted beautifully. You’ll notice that his head is ever so slightly turned downward. At first it might bug you that he doesn’t give you eye contact, but for us it expresses more of his personality that maybe he is trying not to make eye contact with you or other cantina patrons and his mystery and secrecy are his best defenses. A functioning ankle holster has been sculpted and you can place his blaster pistol in there for whenever he needs it. But you can also pose it in his right hand for a different look too. Ellorrs Madak has a gorgeous paint job too. His blue skin has swipes of green on top of it and his unearthly red-outlined yellowish orange eyes are as haunting as they are awesome. He is colorful, but the color scheme is believable and accurate. Color us impressed. And the off-white space suit has been finished off with a subtle pearly finish. Ellorrs Madak is gorgeous. We hope Hasbro makes the other Duros from the cantina too one day.
