After Boba Fett and Bossk, 4-LOM was the very next bounty hunter to get an individual basic carded release (Dengar followed closely behind him in the very next wave) in The Power Of The Force “2” line. While collectors were still wary about the bulkiness and exaggerated features on many of the action figures, fears were somewhat relieved with the release of 4-LOM. Please don’t misunderstand our point. There does exist some inaccuracies with 4-LOM as compared to his onscreen likeness, but the proportions were less hulky and the sculpt and likeness were so good that most of us were able to overlook where he still failed a bit. It was great to see where Kenner/Hasbro was going with the bounty hunters. Boba Fett needed some work, but Bossk and 4-LOM both proved that good change was on the way for the basic figure line. An LOM-series protocol droid, 4-LOM was hired by Darth Vader to find the Millennium Falcon and her crew. A fitting bounty hunter, his name is actually an acrostic meaning “For love or money?” Keeping in mind that 1997 brought us a large chunk of modern updates to the vintage Kenner line, getting this “first time” modern counterparts was a very joyous occasion for most collectors. 4-LOM emphasizes this point greatly.
So, we know that 4-LOM isn’t too beefy when compared to previous offerings, but how does the rest of him stack up? 4-LOM, believe it or not, stacks up quite well. He has a very nice and accurate sculpt. The head sculpt in particular is quite refreshing. The vintage Kenner figure from 1982 was a pure joy of course, but the coloring of the figure was very off, as well as many of the details in his head sculpt. Kenner/Hasbro rectify all of those issues from the past and update the character is ways that supersede our expectations. The bug-like eyes are painted green and the color of the rest of his head is a gray that is a totally different shade than the rest of his body (which is 100% screen accurate). We love it! A tiny red dot accents the droid’s nose and a red crescent shaped line adorns his left breast. But it may just be the deco on the paneling that impresses us the most. 4-LOM has been given a gorgeous rust wash that collects in the crevices of the textured plating of his body. It may be a little bit overdone, but it presents the character in a way that we have never seen until now. You can really see the texture and formation of the droid’s plating. We are so impressed with how well he turned out here.
His belly area is colored in silver and gives a third dimension to his metallic color scheme. 4-LOM comes with the standard six points of articulation which is perhaps all this action figure needs. In short, he just looks so good overall. 4-LOM comes with two guns, one screen accurate and one a Hasbro convention. This is a common thing for The Power Of The Force “2” basic figure line. Kenner/Hasbro is always quick to add an off-screen weapon into the mix for extra play value. But at least collectors get the weapon that was visible in The Empire Strikes Back. Kenner/Hasbro simply calls the weapons blaster pistol and blaster rifle, but both guns can fit nicely into 4-LOM’s hands. It’s likely however that collectors will only be utilizing the blaster rifle when this figure gets displayed in their collections. Aside from a stance that is much too wide, we have to admit that we’re quite pleased with the way 4-LOM has turned out. Bounty hunters in general are more popular for who they are than the role they played in the film. 4-LOM didn’t speak a single word of dialogue in the film. But “stuff” like that doesn’t matter when it comes to Star Wars collecting. 4-LOM is proof that the line is changing for the better too. And that is a big deal for collectors.
