Logray and the Ewoks stand amazed as their newfound idol, protocol droid C-3PO, begins to "magically" levitate as Luke Skywalker uses the power of the Force.
After a seemingly long wait, many collectors started worrying if Kenner/Hasbro would ever be releasing modern Ewoks in The Power Of The Force “2” line. They surprised us all by giving us two Ewoks for the price of one in the Freeze Frame phase of the POTF2 lineup. Obviously feeling that a single Ewok wasn’t enough value in 1998, Kenner/Hasbro crafted two distinct characters we haven’t seen since 1983 and 1984. The pair in interesting. We don’t believe that they ever interacted onscreen at all, but it’s nonetheless a wonderful way for both collectors and Kenner/Hasbro to kill two birds with one stone. Collectors can now welcome Ewoks: Wicket & Logray two-pack, a first in the Freeze Frame line and it will probably be one of the hottest releases in the entire Freeze Frame line. The Ewoks have average likenesses and while Logray looks proportioned accurately, Wicket is just too big. Each Ewok comes with plenty of accessories and look quite nice fully assembled. These are nice first attempts at modern Ewoks and we’re confident that they’re going to go over quite well with those in the collecting community. With a Freeze Frame action slide to top it off, the Ewoks: Wicket & Logray two-pack is a value no matter how you slice it, something that will certainly make those who want their dollars to go far very happy.
Wicket may be the most anticipated Ewok in the basic figure line. We feel that although Kenner /Hasbro has done admirably with the 1998 version, it still needs some work. Wicket has a very nice head sculpt and facial likeness to the onscreen character. His body however is much too bulky and the sculpt is too tall. He should be shorter than Logray and he is, but he seems a little too close in Logray’s stature. In our opinion he should be significantly shorter. The paint operations are very, very nice. Wicket has a white belly and white facial features. He also has dark black eyes. All of these details recreate the character nicely. He comes with a removable cowl which fits his head like a glove. He also comes with his staff and it too seems a little too tall for the inquisitive Ewok. The pose of Wicket is alright, but we think it could have been better. He is positioned in a forward-walking manner and his balance is a little compromised because of that. A great effort, we still look forward until Hasbro can revisit this figure down the road when they can utilize better technology and a little more articulation added to the design of the sculpt. Wicket will go down in action figure history as one of two Ewoks that began the Bright Tree Village tribe of the basic figure line.
Logray is the finer figure in this two-pack. We think Hasbro got the scale of him perfectly. What’s more, the paint operations are equally done well. While the 1983 ROTJ Logray (Ewok Medicine Man) figure was much too tall, we think Kenner mastered the likeness as well as the paint operations of that figure extremely well. It still holds us well today. Thankfully, for the most part, Kenner/Hasbro followed suit for the 1998 release. A decade and a half later, the modern Logray doesn’t have any enhanced articulation or added accessories. Kenner really did a fine job with the original release as it’s been the benchmark for the modern version. Logray comes with a satchel, removable headdress and ornate staff, all of which complement the figure perfectly. The striped fur has been recreated well, although we have to be honest and state that the alternating lines are a little too harsh and aren’t as seamless as the 1983 figure. Logray is also a little too chubby and we hope that future Ewoks will be sculpted with more streamlined bodies. As a set, you could do a whole lot worse than this. We love that Kenner/Hasbro has decided that the Ewok species is worthy of doubling up on because in the vintage Kenner era we received eight in all individual releases. It will be interesting to see where the modern line goes.
