I’ll just come out and say it. Hammerhead is unequivocally my favorite vintage Kenner figure from the STAR WARS line. I was and still am enamored with the Ithorian species and probably will be until the day I die. Therefore all action figures of these characters rank highly for me to this day. I recall believing at the time that Hammerhead was a bad guy. Of course it would be years later that Momaw Nadon is actually a peaceful character who works in conjunction with the Rebel Alliance. I suppose the Imperial blaster he came with prevented that from becoming a reality for me a child. Generally speaking and thankfully, we didn’t have finite details like these as kids which infected or skewed our play. For me, Hammerhead was often utilized as the local cantina bully. Or he was an undercover agent. Or he was just a bar patron. But whatever I decided, he went many places with me: school, church, outside, inside, here, there and everywhere. I don’t think I ever consciously noticed that his turquoise shell was completely wrong for the onscreen character. But Hasbro nailed the head sculpt (but not so much the eyes I guess) and his veiny skin enthralled me as much as it grossed me out. Hammerhead may not have piqued my interest in Star Wars action figures, but he solidified my passion. And I love this figure just as much today as I did when I was a young Star Wars action figure collector.
