Princess Leia Organa was one of the greatest leaders of the Rebel Alliance, fearless on the battlefield and dedicated to ending the Empire's tyranny.
The Black Series “Publishing Program” is reaching deep into the many characters introduced in various books and comics, and other print. Displayed in gorgeous faux comic book packaging, Princess Leia Organa from the “Princess Leia” comic series is another addition to the line. Hasbro took 2018’s The Black Series [Phase III] Princess Leia (Bespin Escape) figure, a former Target exclusive, and added new forearms and lower legs. They then paired the body with a revised head sculpt of 2020’s The Black Series [Phase IV] Princess Leia Organa (Endor) (ROTJ03) figure with a new hairstyle. They blended the parts and developed this comic-based interpretation of our favorite strong female Star Wars character. The figure looks alright, but there are some inconsistencies between the comic book character and the 6-inch figure meant to interpret it. Hasbro also added a removable cape (perhaps ‘elongated shawl’ is a better description) and a removable holster/belt combination piece that houses Leia’s defender sporting blaster pistol. And for good measure, they also threw in an E-11 blaster. Altogether, the figure looks great and is reminiscent of the original Star Wars comics’ interpretation of Princess Leia. In a very indirect way, this action figure kills two birds with one stone. But you have to use your imagination a bit. Leia has an attractive face and an athletic body and comes outfitted with more things than Hasbro’s “deluxe” figure scams. Collectors should be happy with what they get here.
When Princess Leia (Bespin Escape) was released as a first-time offering for the 6-inch action figure line, Collectors knew other versions of the character wearing this outfit would be inevitable. But we probably didn’t anticipate Hasbro reaching deep into the comics for their next choice. For the time being, we’ll appreciate what Hasbro did with this version of Princess Leia Organa because it does look rather appealing. Those interested in the 6-inch line will discover that Hasbro did right by this figure, from its excellent use of existing parts to the new additions added to make it unique. It also has gorgeous paint operations and articulates wonderfully despite some older pieces. If you’re into comics, you will love this version of Princess Leia Organa. As you know, Princess Leia Organa comes with a marvelous head sculpt and likeness. Hasbro retools the head sculpts with different hairpieces to give us various Leia’s throughout the Star Wars saga. This one is the latest iteration. The figure is in perfect scale to the rest of the figures in the 6-inch line. It comes loaded with premium articulation, including 27 points of ball-jointed, ball-socket, and double-hinge-jointed articulation. These points make the figure capable of achieving almost any position you desire. The movement is a bit more mobile than some other figures in the line, including the newest ones. Nothing is encumbering their full potential, and they’re free to move as needed to assist you in creating some dynamic poses for this figure.
Although not unfamiliar at this point to collectors, Princess Leia Organa comes with a simple costume, but Hasbro tooled it well. The outfit is mostly the one we see the on-screen character wear on Hoth and Bespin in The Empire Strikes Back, but this time the figure has long dark boots and light cuffs on the arms that match the shawl. All of these elements are perfectly in place to recreate this “off-screen” iteration of the character. It is a fantastic release for 6-inch collectors, and it should do well for those who love all of the non-mainstream stories that happen throughout various sources of the canon. Princess Leia Organa comes nicely accessorized, unlike many (most) other figures in The Black Series 6-inch line. We get multiple blasters and removable gear. What more could you want here? We must comment on the Photo Real deco. The face is beautiful and looks like the character. We’ve gone through too many releases where Princess Leia Organa looks horrible. Those days appear to be long gone, thank the Maker. We must admit that we’re becoming fans of the “Publishing Program” subline of action figures. Between the packaging style and the obscure character choices, it’s a refreshing break for collectors of The Black Series line. It’s nice to get other characters besides those from The Mandalorian. We’d love to see them continue reintroducing the most popular Star Wars characters in these non-movie outfits and help develop the 6-inch line more extensively by reaching into the far depths of the canon. Collectors deserve that.
