Cold, calculating droid 4-LOM and Gand bounty hunter Zuckuss were summoned by Darth Vader to locate the Millennium Falcon and her crew in STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK – and together, they make a deadly pair.
Well, well, well. We get a The Empire Strikes Back-focused figure set during the 40th Anniversary of Return Of The Jedi, and this makes perfect sense to the current Hasbro Star Wars team, we’re sure. In their defense, Hasbro needed to complete the half-dozen bounty hunters that appeared in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and it’s only lousy timing that makes this set feel, ironically, untimely. That said, the last two-pack that completes the characters that make up the Executor bridge briefing include 4-LOM and Zuckuss. What makes the packaging aspect of this exclusive the most interesting is that the character bios correctly describe 4-LOM and Zuckuss, but Hasbro didn’t correct the naming mistakes Kenner did in the early 80s as they did for previous releases of these characters. They likely wanted to keep the novelty of error alive with this commemorative set that provides a flashback for longtime collectors of a happier era, but it confuses things when you attempt to describe them, so we’ll do our best here. Like all of the figures in the Retro Collection lineup, the new versions of these classic action figures come with softer features, and details feel muddled and washed away. 4-LOM and Zuckuss hold up well, and their unique weapons and other accessories are faithful to the original releases. Still, the colors are a tad off, and this slight difference feels compounded by the repetitive packaging and mediocre sculpting. Many collectors should be happy to have all six bounty hunters in this modern format now. We wonder if Hasbro will go deeper into the background characters with other films because bounty hunters, droids, and aliens do much to help diversify collecting and provide the necessary enjoyment required to sustain it.
