Concept Boba Fett (Ralph McQuarrie Signature Series) - TAC - Basic (30 15)

Boba Fett was one of the first new characters to be designed for The Empire Strikes Back. The costume began as a Mandalorian supercommando suit and went through various designs, as well as being aged, dented, and painted to give it a battle-scarred appearance. It's final look hides a plethora of built-in weapons – and the identity of the ruthless bounty hunter it encases.

We’re just going to come out and say it. Concept Boba Fett is the absolute best figure in the entire 30 (77-07) line. Can you honestly think of a better and more unique action figure than this one yourself? We likely doubt it. Never before attempted and created exceeding every expectation in our book, Concept Boba Fett is the absolute one action figure everyone should have in his or her collection. He is the best action figure for many reasons, but one thing that immediately comes to mind is the interchangeable portraits. It’s not too often that Hasbro graces us with this option, but it is particularly special for Concept Boba Fett. It enables us to create action figure versions of both the Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston concepts of the bounty hunter that would soon become one of the most popular Star Wars characters of all time. Boba Fett went through an incredible metamorphosis and it was all the trial and error of perfecting him which created a timeless and awesome bounty hunter. Concept Boba Fett highly succeeds as an action figure with lots of articulation and great paint operations. But it’s probably more important to note all of the details Hasbro has managed to include in the action figure from the actual concept drawings. What makes the concept figures in the 30 (77-07) line extra special is that Ralph McQuarrie himself had direct input when Hasbro designed the action figures. So, this is essence makes them more authentic that many other action figures they have produced.

Concept Boba Fett isn’t super-articulated. But in all honesty, it doesn’t matter. Loaded with a generous 12 points of “normal” articulation (14 if you count the fold-out belly blaster and movable antenna on his helmet), he has every joint you’ll ever need to get him in a satisfying array of positions. But as far as standard articulation goes, he comes without ankle joints. This likely won’t be an action figure that you’ll be needing to fill out action dioramas or what-have-you, so Concept Boba Fett should serve as his own display piece, or perhaps the centerpiece of your concept art collection. He comes with a blaster pistol (and a functioning holster), a flame (that attaches very nicely to his gauntlet), a removable backpack and the alternate portrait. There are many buttons and small details that are painted in a dark grayish blue throughout his uniform. And this subtle blue detail looks extra special since it is infrequent throughout his outfit. Concept Boba Fett can be split into many pieces. He can split at the waist and his holster, belly gun, and torso are all separate pieces. We’re not so sure if we understand why Hasbro has elected this figure to be so transformable, there must be things in the in-depth concept art that we’re missing at the moment which justifies the reason for this versatility. But once fully assembled, this action figures is seamless and you likely wouldn’t believe it can break down into as many pieces as it can. Concept Boba Fett is just that well made.

Seeing Boba Fett in an all-white costume is quite surreal. And seeing this translated into action figure form is extraordinarily special. Hasbro’s efforts have paid off big time here and it is absolutely one of their greatest accomplishments in their entire action figure run. From the confident stance to the flexibility in both weaponry and portraits makes Concept Boba Fett one of the most versatile action figures Hasbro has made for us in a very long time. And Concept Boba Fett completely blows away all of the other concept figures in the 30 (77-07). This may be an easy feat since it’s Boba Fett, but all of the Ralph McQuarrie Signature Series figures are done extremely well, yet Boba Fett takes the cake. And we really can’t stop raving about the helmets. Both portraits look excellent on the body and we honestly are unable to choose a more favorite head sculpt. We find the McQuarrie portrait as relevant and important as the Johnston portrait. And despite getting so many versions of Boba Fett in the action figure line so far to date, Hasbro can still bring us more. In fact, we would one day love to see a Boba Fett boxed set of every 3.75” definitive incarnation of Boba Fett (and some new ones not yet made like the prototype version for example). We actually scratch our heads that this hasn’t been done yet. (Why on Earth Hasbro made those terrible Mandalorian boxed sets before a Boba Fett boxed set is beyond our comprehension, but we digress.) Concept Boba Fett is a figure you should already have by now, but if you don’t, you best make it your mission!
