Obi-Wan Kenobi and Master Yoda find themselves in the midst of tragic circumstances and must decide the fates of the newborn Skywalker twins. Senator Bail Organa volunteers to adopt Leia, while Yoda instructs Obi-Wan to deliver Luke to his aunt and uncle on Tatooine. After giving Luke to his family, Obi-Wan goes into seclusion on Tatooine. He will one day guide young Luke in the ways of the Force. The separation of the twins is a difficult decision, but Obi-Wan and Yoda are confident that there will be a day when it will prove key in the return of the Jedi.
The two Separation Of The Twins Walmart exclusive figures are technically the first “basic carded” packaged figures in The Saga Collection. These were the first two figures to sport the all-new line look, which brought collecting to a new and organized level of fun. Hasbro released The Saga Collection’s first wave of figures at various retail chains in December of 2005. We prepared ourselves to add them to our collections and store pegs, thanks to the Separation Of The Twins exclusives. Brilliant diorama backgrounds showing pivotal and poignant scenes from the films created an experience similar to 2004’s The Original Trilogy Collection. Hasbro completed the new look with the figure surrounded by a silver and black starfield. This style of basic figure is always warmly received and embraced by collectors because it’s reminiscent of the good old Kenner days. It was lovely to see its return for The Saga Collection. For TSC, however, the boxed bubble was replaced with a curved bubble. So it appears as if Hasbro brought forth the curvature elements from the Revenge Of The Sith line into the mix. While it lends a sleek and slick look the packaging, it makes stacking them a nightmare for most collectors. (Be sure to always beg for those empty cases at retail!)
Infant Luke Skywalker With Obi-Wan Kenobi is the second half of the Separation Of The Twins Walmart exclusive sets. They both come in a case assortment ratio of 25% each. The remaining 50% was essential Revenge Of The Sith figures that didn’t yet meet demand. The other older figures still came in Revenge Of The Sith packaging. Hasbro felt they could stand a few more appearances at retail. These distinctive case assortments didn’t hit that heavily at Walmart across the country, but interestingly the low shipments were still enough to meet demand, or so it seems. People weren’t scurrying for them, and those that wanted them appeared to secure them with relative ease. Technically, Obi-Wan Kenobi is the “accessory” here. We find it a little humorous that Obi-Wan Kenobi is “with” Infant Luke Skywalker instead of the opposite. Regardless, the great news is that Obi-Wan is super-articulated and remains one of the top two best Episode III Obi-Wan Kenobi action figures Hasbro has ever designed. It’s a slight repaint of 2005’s ROTS Obi-Wan Kenobi (III 55) figure. The figure comes with a restrictive outer robe, but it’s easily removable. You can take it off and pose the figure freely without it. Hasbro included the lightsaber hilt from the original release, but they decided to omit the fully lit lightsaber and the headset.
Infant Luke Skywalker and Infant Leia Organa share each other’s mold. Hasbro was scene-specific and ensured that Luke received closed eyes as the character was sleeping when Obi-Wan Kenobi dropped him off to Owen and Beru on Tatooine in the scenes from Episode III. And of course, the “figure” looks adorable. Shrouded in a yellow blanket, we think Hasbro may have goofed on the color here. It may have been a pale shade of yellow used in the film, but the final scene in Episode III took place at dusk or dawn (who knows), so the lighting was dark, and the exact shade may never be known. Still, it’s not enough to bother us. And we’re happy to see this figure in the toy line finally. For a while, collectors became concerned with whether Hasbro would bring us infant versions of our favorite heroes. Now we don’t have to worry about that. We’re glad they did. The interaction between action figure and “baby” looks outstanding in an already-established Star Wars toy line. Obi-Wan Kenobi can hold Infant Luke Skywalker effortlessly, and ultimately, it seems to scale. It’s the small things in the Star Wars line that makes it a pleasure to be a collector. Here are two more “smaller” items to add more joy to your collection.
