Another Disney Star Wars film in the Disney Star Wars era means another line look and in that line look comes another 5POA multipack that Disney zealots will claim to understand its purpose while longtime collectors continue to scratch their heads. Wash, rinse and repeat. That’s what living under the Disney Star Wars regime feels like anymore. Now Hasbro isn’t free from blame. They are limited with what they can produce for Disney Star Wars. But once they find a formula, they seem to keep replicating it year after year. For the Star Wars [The Last Jedi] line look, they’ve cobbled together a collection of figures from across the Star Wars saga once again. Although many characters get repeated each year, Hasbro decided to throw in a couple of figures that haven’t been re-released in quite some time. Sadly, these older sculpts come with dreadful paint operations and haven’t been revised in any way, shape or form. So it feels like we’re reliving 2013-2014 once again in the 5POA format. It appears that Hasbro attempted to choose one character from across the episodic films, but they made a blunder or two, not that anyone will care. So, let us check out the contents and see once again why you don’t need another multipack like this.
At least Hasbro gave this eight-pack of figures a name. Usually, they don’t and just list the figures’ names as the title. All eight figures are encapsulated under the “Era Of The Force” title…. whatever that means. Isn’t the entire timeline of the Star Wars saga the “era of the Force”? Let’s talk about those few blunders. The figures are out of order first of all. They’re not packaged in an ascending or descending order based on the episode. We see some semblance of order, but none of the figures here have been organized in a way that makes sense, top to bottom, bottom to top, etc. However, if you look at each row of figures from left to right, some of this begins to make sense, in reverse order so to speak. Also, there is no representation from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back here, although we believe they may have mistakenly included the Episode II/Episode III Yoda (with lightsaber) as the placeholder for Episode V. We're also confused about something else. With eight slots in this set, is Rey (Resistance Outfit) meant to be the “Episode 8” figure in this lot, or did they double pack Episode 7 characters so Kylo Ren has someone to duel? Again, the whole arrangement her is perplexing at best. And its release is unnecessary.
Included in this set in the top row are Yoda (based on Episode II or Episode III), Luke Skywalker (in his combat poncho and based on Episode VI), and the aforementioned Kylo Ren and Rey (Resistance Outfit) (both based on their Episode VII and/or Episode VIII appearances or both or one or the other). The bottom row includes Darth Maul (based on Episode I), Mace Windu (based on Episode II and/or Episode III), Obi-Wan Kenobi (based on Episode III) and Darth Vader (based on Episode IV and/or Rogue One. All figures have been pulled from the previous line looks. Yoda, Darth Maul, Mace Windu and Obi-Wan Kenobi are all slight repaints of the figures from the 2013-2014 Star Wars [Darth Vader/Revenge Of The Sith] Saga Legends line. Luke Skywalker is a slight repaint that was first available in 2015’s Rebels Saga Legends line. Rey (Resistance Base) is a slight repaint of the figure from 2016’s The Force Awakens basic figure line. And both Kylo Ren and Darth Vader are the upgraded 5POA figures from 2016’s Rogue One basic figure line. Yes, sure. This set would be good for someone just starting out. But with all that’s available on the aftermarket for cheap (including many of these figures), is this set necessary?
