Ki-Adi-Mundi (Jedi Master) - 1:6 Scale Figures

Ki-Adi Mundi was an alien representative who sat on the Jedi Council. A humanoid being, Ki's most distinguishing physical feature was an enlarged conical cranium that contained a binary brain. When Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn reported a Sith attack during the events surrounding the Battle of Naboo, Ki-Adi-Mundi expressed shock at the notion. "Impossible," he remarked, "the Sith have been extinct for a millennium." For its failure to detect the Sith menace in time, the Jedi first suffered the loss of one of its greatest Masters, Qui-Gon. Ki-Adi-Mundi voyaged to Naboo to attend Jinn's somber funeral and also attended the jubilant celebration that marked the liberation of Naboo.

A decade later, Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi continues to serve on the Council. He was present during one of the gravest crises ever to face the Jedi order: the Separatist movement that threatened to split the Republic. Like his fellow Jedi, Ki-Adi-Mundi became a general in the Clone Wars, leading clone trooper infantry on campaigns scattered throughout the galaxy.

During the Outer Rim Sieges, as the Clone Wars were nearing their end, Ki-Adi-Mundi was stationed on the Banking Clan stronghold world of Mygeeto. There, he led the Galactic Marine clone troopers with Commander Bacara. He stayed in touch with Coruscant as the Jedi Council was experiencing the changes initiated by Chancellor Palpatine. He grew wary of the Chancellor and his bids for increased executive power. When the upper tier of the Jedi Council – himself, Yoda and Mace Windu – discussed a possible course of action to remove the Chancellor, Ki-Adi-Mundi advised that the Jedi Order would have to take control of the Senate in the interim, to ensure a secure transition of power. Taken out of context, such discourse would be branded treason – it was a disturbing sign at just how unstable the democracy of the Republic had become.

Once Sideshow Collectibles released the very first 1:6 Scale Figure, Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight), they went buck wild with releasing figures from the Order Of The Jedi collection. We got more Jedi in a few short years than we may have estimated and for the most part, they were unbelievable works of art. Some suffered from clumsy limbs and stubborn joints that “snapped” into place instead of “moving” into place. Criticism aside, they are still some of the greatest figures we have ever seen. What is so cool about how Sideshow categorizes their 1:6 Scale Figures line is that they are arranged by theme and not by movie. This allows for greater selection and versatility per category while still being able to focus on all the wonderful Star Wars films. Perhaps the only complaint collectors started voicing was that all the Jedi were becoming a bit too much like the clones because of the quickly aging Art S. Buck body type. And while there is really no room to criticize Sideshow’s prolific and stunning work on their Star Wars figures, the Art S. Buck body form created limitations that were starting to become a problem. The nature of that body frame severely limits optimal posing because the joints don’t necessarily stay in place (it varies from one figure to the next) and fall once you get a pose you like. But Sideshow Collectibles really does a great job making up for the figure’s limitations by creating a beautiful portrait and a costume that exceeds expectations.

Ki-Adi-Mundi was announced July 3, 2008 just in time for Independence Day. It made it in time for Christmas and many collectors thought that they missed out on altogether because it was a Domestic Exclusive on their website and only released within the United States. It didn’t make its way to specialty and comic books shops and with a limited run of only 3000 pieces, it didn’t have the reaching power of some of the earlier Jedi 1:6 Scale Figures. And this is a shame because Ki-Adi-Mundi is one spectacular figure. From his portrait to his brilliantly woven Jedi costume, Sideshow Collectibles proves time and again that they are leaders in accuracy, authenticity, brilliant craftsmanship and stunning decorating. Ki-Adi-Mundi may not be as accessorized as some of the earlier 1:6 Scale Figures that they made, he comes with just enough and helps to round out the Jedi Order is very positive ways. It is apparent that Sideshow took extra special care and replicated the pattern of Ki-Adi-Mundi's head perfectly. This attention to detail also makes its way to his hands. The evenness of the matching patterns and textures are stunning and we are quite impressed with the final execution of the figure. We think it even looks better than the prototype Sideshow presented when this figure went up for pre-order.

Complete with believable dark circles around, yellowed white hair and natural wrinkles that bring his face to life, Sideshow has faithfully replicated this brave Jedi Master beyond words and we think it was one of the best Jedi to attack in their growing line. It of course puts the Hasbro 12” version to shame. While very few Hasbro figures can match the level of intensity of the Sideshow figures, Ki-Adi-Mundi is light years from the Hasbro version in more way than one. Ki-Adi-Mundi has one of the most unique Jedi outfits of all of his peers. The outer shirt almost functions like a vest yet wraps around his back below his butt. And his shirt is very baggy and has a very distinct texture to it. Sideshow also nailed this perfectly as well. He comes with a very tiny satchel that hangs from a real leather strap and it looks completely amazing. We love tiny accessories like this on our 1:6 Scale Figures. His lightsaber comes in a shade of blue we haven’t seen before in Sideshow’s line and he also comes with an unlit hilt that fits in his hand perfectly. Ki-Adi-Mundi has very unique yellow eyes that catch your glance almost instantaneously. This figure shines from head to toe and we can honestly overlook the Art S. Buck body form underneath all that “artwork”. Completely sold out, the aftermarket is the only place you are going to be able to locate this gem. We recommend not waiting too much longer if you still need him.
