Get Ready For Star Wars [Shadow Of The Dark Side]!

Posted by Paul | August 31, 2016 at 01:11 PM ET |

Beginning tomorrow, Jedi Temple Archives is about to embark on an intense run of Research Droids Reviews, FlashBack Reviews and Visual Guides focusing on the Star Wars [Shadow of The Dark Side] Saga Legends figures and it will take us right up to Rogue Friday. This collection of action figures was meant to be the “kid focused” sub-line while collectors basked in the splendor of The Vintage Collection running concurrently alongside it. This Saga Legends line initially focused on bounty hunters, as that was a big story arc in The Clone Wars’ third season on television, but slowly the line brought in some of the most popular heroes and villains of the Star Wars saga. Because this line was overshadowed by The Vintage Collection, many Star Wars fan sites, including us, allowed this wonderful collection of figures to fall by the wayside. It’s only now that we’re giving it the attention it deserves. Many feel that the 2007 30 (77-07) Saga Legends line was the best, and from many perspectives it was (thanks to the Fans’ Choice votes), but when everything gets distilled, it’s our own belief that it was the Star Wars [Shadow Of The Dark Side] Saga Legends line that ends up being the superior collection. Not only did it bring some of Hasbro's finest sculpts back to retail, the character selection, save for a few examples, nicely complemented the figures that were part of The Vintage Collection. We truly received some of the greatest action figures between 2010 and 2011, and the Star Wars [Shadow Of The Dark Side] Saga Legends figures certainly helped in making that a reality.

To give the appropriate attention this sub-line deserves, we are doing a massive run of all of the figures in this collection. This will be accomplished through either all-new RDRs, FlashBack Reviews, Visual Guides, or a combination of all of these things. Also, to help commemorate this line and the long, rich history of the original Saga Legends lines, we have put together a pretty neat and complete Saga Legends Matrix which shows which characters were unique to each line look, which ones were carried forward and the historical sculpts from which these figures were based (from 2007-2011). Be sure to check it out! Once we’re done with the run, you shouldn’t be able to find a more complete and thorough analysis of this fantastic line of “greatest hits” action figures anywhere on the web! Throughout the Saga Legends' entire five year run, Hasbro released 84 unique action figures across 134 different packaging variations. And we bought them all!

Review: Stormtrooper (Death Star Chase) - SW [S - P3] - Hall Of Fame

Posted by Paul | August 30, 2016 at 12:25 AM ET |

We are continuing to look at a group of figures that could be considered the precursor to the 2007 30 (77-07) Saga Legends line. In 2004, Hasbro created a collection of repacked action figures in the Star Wars "Saga" line and unofficially dubbed them the Hall Of Fame collection. Next up is Stormtrooper (Death Star Chase). This figure is the focus of our Research Droids Reviews today. Be sure to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Rogue One Products Hitting eBay!

Posted by Paul | August 29, 2016 at 09:55 AM ET |

And it begins. Rogue One product must have just made it to California's border. The eBay auctions are starting to pop up!

Hasbro said the line did well, but it's probably not a great sign for the Walmart exclusive 3.75" The Black Series line when JTA sponsor BBTS is now selling the case assortments. The problem with this line is it lacks richness, versatility and quantity. You can't have five new figures over and over. You needs many different types of figures in lower numbers. In order for a super-articulated 3.75" line to survive and thrive in this day and age you also have to produce characters that collectors want: i.e. Jabba's palace aliens, cantina aliens, never-before-made characters, etc. Whether distribution has put this line in jeopardy or Walmart itself (we believe the latter), hopefully Hasbro will see that this needs to be a full, rich mainline release (that appeals to collectors) and not a store exclusive.

In 2004, Hasbro created a collection of repacked action figures in the Star Wars "Saga" line and unofficially dubbed them the Hall Of Fame collection. Begun The Leaks On eBay Have! Rogue One Auction Found!

Posted by Paul | August 28, 2016 at 09:24 PM ET |

Here we go again! Hasbro holding back on the Rogue One product announcements just isn't going to prevent all the leaks from surfacing. An in-hand auction has popped up for the U-wing vehicle's pack-in figure and in the auction you can see a pretty big image of Cassian Andor up close and a little too personal, unfortunately. He looks terrible! I guess this one isn't a production sample either! (sarcasm) Check it out! Special thanks to rivesjunctionite for finding this auction!

BREAKING NEWS! Rogue One 3.75" Wave 1 Carded Images Revealed!

Longtime JTA reader icatch9 has found something surprising at his local Meijer in Illinois today. The BB-8 and R2-D2 big Jakks Pacific figures arrived, and then the "shampoo bottle" single versions of BB-8 and R2-D2 in Hasbro's line. Although nothing new, these single-packed figure were SUPPOSED to pre-date the TARGET exclusive three-pack (but we know how lovely distribution is these days). Nothing like new merchandise arriving as stores are clearancing out The Force Awakens stuff to prepare for Rogue One! Gotta love it!

Michael Leader, the man who played the Stormtrooper that famously hit his head on the blast shield doorway has died. Metro.co.uk has the full story. Special thanks to JTA reader Marc G. for the alert!

UPDATE 1: It looks like Metro.co.uk has an inaccurate story. Although Michael Leader did pass away, apparently he was not responsible for this famous Star Wars blooper. Wookieepedia goes on to explain that the actor who hit his head was actually Laurie Goode (who is alive and well).

UPDATE 2: This story may be accurate. Wookieepedia documents that BOTH Michael Leader and Laurie Goode recall bumping their heads as stormtroopers. We'll let you decide.

Riverspoon Studios has designed beautiful custom vintage inspired Star Wars Funko Pop! boxes because, well, Star Wars merchandise doesn't look better in anything else obviously. And now I want these for my own collection. Hasbro, Funko, Gentle Giant, Disney and every other Star Wars license: please pay attention. Don't squander 2017. It's the 40th anniversary of the movie that started it all. And there won't be a better time to grab all of the collectors that you've lost. So this means it MUST be the year for vintage-inspired Kenner packaging. It's the ONLY thing that will guarantee you massive sales in 2017. Please make it happen! Let's see TVC return, let's see The Black Series 6" line in miniature Large Size Action Figure boxed and let's see Funko do this to the Pops! line. And let's see a whole bunch more things like this happen! Special thanks to friend Allen S. for alerting me to this beautiful mess.

Jedi Showdown

After the news broke that Disney was searching for an actor to play a young Lando in the upcoming Han Solo movie, speculation about who could possibly replace Billy Dee Williams began. Now a new report suggests that there is already a frontrunner. Birth. Movies. Death. is reporting that Donald Glover (Community, The Martian) is the first choice to play young Lando. You could do a lot worse than Donald Glover. I like Glover and he has proven himself as both a comedic and dramatic actor. But is he a good choice for Lando? I don't know. As with Han Solo and Harrison Ford, it's difficult to accept someone besides Billy Dee Williams as Lando. Although I won't write the movie off yet, especially with Phil Lord and Chris Miller directing, I still don't like the idea of a young Han Solo movie. Han Solo has one of the most complete character arcs in the entire saga, so at least on paper this film seems unnecessary to me. In addition to my discomfort with recasting Han and now Lando. At least bring Billy Dee back for Episode 8! What do you think about the potential casting of Glover as Lando? Let us know in the comments!

Lando Joining Han In The Upcoming Han Solo Movie?

Posted by Chuck | August 11, 2016 at 10:51 PM ET |

Lando is now rumored to join Solo in the Han Solo movie. This is not really unexpected, and casting the right Lando is almost as important as casting the right Han Solo. Lando has a strong connection to Han's past, so adding him in the movie is a good move! Let's hope it's true, and done right! Cinema Blend has the full report! Rogue One Reshoot Drama Returns

Posted by Mike_Taber | August 06, 2016 at 02:59 PM ET |

When the news broke that Rogue One would be undergoing several weeks of reshoots, some people jumped to the conclusion that Rogue One was a troubled production and that the sky was falling. I never bought into that theory and the reaction seemed entirely overblown to me. Virtually every movie of this size will experience reshoots. It happened with The Force Awakens and I'm sure it will happen with Episode 8. The Hollywood Reporter has finally provided some clarity on the secretive Rogue One reshoots though ... ABC Boss Talks Star Wars TV Show Possibilities

Posted by Mike_Taber | August 06, 2016 at 02:01 PM ET |

Stating the obvious, ABC president Channing Dungey expressed her desire to introduce a Star Wars TV show on ABC. She went on to say that talks with Lucasfilm are ongoing. Variety has the full report. So what's the first Star Wars TV show we should expect? Cheers set in the cantina? Let the Star Wars TV show puns begin! I'll start with The X-Wing Files. (Alternate puns included: Who's the Bossk?, I Love Lando, Mr. Lobot, and Band of Bothans). As for the prospect of an Star Wars TV show on ABC, it has me a little nervous. I think Netflix would probably be a better fit for Star Wars. What do you think? Let us know in our comments!

The Black Series [Phase III] Line Look - The Man Who Designed It

Posted by Paul | August 05, 2016 at 05:01 PM ET |

In case you haven't seen this yet, there is a cool article at Gregory Titus' website, the man who design The Black Series [Phase III] line look, where he goes into short, but descriptive detail about how this line look was approached. We suggest checking it out. Special thanks to Ayem Mayhem for the link.

JTA reader Sloth from Hoth directs or attention to site Marvel Toy News where they announce the arrival of the Guardians of the Galaxy animated figures. If you look closely, Hasbro has spent time and money to add enhanced articulation to these figures and the paint operations are incredible. If this is a kids' line, why didn't they stick to the 5POA format? Why can't Star Wars get similar treatment and look this good? Will it eventually get this similar treatment? Check out the image below and read Sloth from Hoth's thoughts and be sure to chime in as well!!

Hasbro Toy Shop Restocks Again! Rey (Resistance Base) In Stock!

Posted by Paul | August 04, 2016 at 08:33 PM ET |

Hasbro Toy Shop has restocked their eBay store again and this time there are some great The Force Awakens 3.75" choices including Rey (Resistance Base) amongst many others Get yours before they're gone! Special thanks to JTA readers Steve and hokiehomeboy for the alerts!

JTA German reader Funtomaz actually spent the time to analyze the data results of JTA's informal survey/poll on ranking the various Hasbro Star Wars lines and what collectors want to see on store pegs. (Thank God for bigger nerds than me!) As you recall, Hasbro did something similarly this year with random visitors to their booth at San Diego Comic Con. The results are interesting, and Thomas summarizes his analysis for us all. You can read it by clicking through. But since we know that the Hasbro Board Room likes presentations and data facts, we hope that the Hasbro Design and Marketing Team could pass this bit of empirical data onto the suits as needed. Thanks for the effort Thomas!

They're So Late That No One Cares Anymore

Posted by Paul | August 03, 2016 at 01:33 PM ET |

Five new super-articulated 3.75" figures since Force Friday in September 2015. The final wave including 60% of the new TFA characters is arriving 8 months late for most collectors. What could be more wrong than this disgusting treatment of the bread and butter of the Star Wars line? We know, we know. At least they're arriving, right? We really sometimes wonder if there is any hope left with this scale. How are the same five figures supposed to compete against the "richness" of the 5POA line.... or even the slightly wider-ranged diversity of the TBS6 line? It's just not getting the right treatment it deserves. Hasbro told me directly that Walmart knows what they have by securing 3.75" super-articulated exclusivity and that they would treat it well. Well, Walmart has proven since September that they have no right selling the line. Thanks to all who sent in reports and images for a wave of figures we all should have had before Christmas last year. Oh, and Hasbro, Walmart.com STILL DOESN'T have these up for pre-order yet on their site. It's a colossal failure.

An Alternate Source For The SDCC Exclusive TBS6 Obi-Wan Kenobi

Posted by Paul | August 02, 2016 at 02:43 PM ET |

Site A1 Toys in the UK have the SDCC exclusive Obi-Wan Kenobi in stock for purchase. If you don't want to play the impossible game of getting this at Hasbro Toy Shop, this may be your best alternate. If you can go in on this with a few people, it will really help with shipping costs. Regardless, this is going to be significantly more than at Hasbro ToyShop, but cheaper than eBay. Special thanks to friend Matt Booker at Jedi News for the scoop!

Review: R2-A3/R5-K6/R2-F2 - TBS6 [P3] - Toys R Us Exclusive

Posted by Paul | August 02, 2016 at 12:10 AM ET |

The Toys R Us exclusive R2-A3/R5-K6/R2-F2 astromech 3-pack is not bad at all. If you can get past that then you'll find a nice trio of figures here. Bittersweet it is to have this mindset nowadays. Check them out in our Research Droids Reviews.
