Make A Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight) You Can Call Definitive!

Posted by Paul | May 31, 2013 at 09:44 PM ET |

Highly respected friend and SWActionNews/JTA reader Dale H. has alerted me to an ingenious Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight) "custom" he's made with a post on my Facebook page. My jaw dropped to the ground when I saw it, so I absolutely had to share it with my JTA friends. What is so surprising is that there isn't any drastic cobbling of figures happening here. Dale just fitted the cloak appropriately and used a different head sculpt Hasbro should have used from the beginning (and maybe one or two other simple enhancements). See his simply ingenious work in JTA affiliate SWActionNews' forums for complete directions to have this astonishing Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight) figure in your own collection! A worthy read indeed!

Review: General Veers [Regular Edition] - Mini Bust

Posted by Paul | May 31, 2013 at 05:41 AM ET |

One of Gentle Giant's biggest mistakes surrounded the regular version of the General Veers Mini Bust. If you don't know what we're talking about, you should. It affected many collectors. The only way you were saved from the mess is if you were a PGM. Find out more in our Research Droids Reviews today! Review: Watto - Mini Bust

Posted by Paul | May 30, 2013 at 06:18 AM ET |

Wow! What a fine likeness of Watto the Mini Bust interpretation of him is. It's hard to believe someone this small could be a human trafficker, doesn't it? he is a perfect example of why the Mini Bust line can be so awesome. See what we mean in our Research Droids Reviews today! Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. So, we have no reason for worry about the Black Series only seeing release in North Amercia, that much is true. That's good news. But what about the MSRP? I promised readers we would start a separate discussion on this, so here it is. Previews sets their MSRPs very high (above average), but it prompted a question: At what price will Hasbro price you out of buying figures? Collectors have surmised from Hasbro's recent answers that we could very well be paying more than $9.99 for the 3.75" Black Series line. And you can extrapolate that it's very possible that the 6" Black Series line could quickly make its way above $19.99. If this happens, are you out? Will you ride this bumpy road? Let us know! Click through to join the discussion. This "so-called" Star Wars fan site wants to know!

Previews Says Black Series Is Available Only In USA And Canada

Posted by Paul | May 29, 2013 at 08:24 PM ET |

UPDATE: There is no need to worry. We have received multiple explanations despite what the Previews catalogue says. Dan from Plastic Empire sends us scans of the upcoming Black Series figures. Per Previews, the 6" and 3.75" lines are only available in the USA, Canada and American territories. At the moment, this is contradictory to what we already know because international vendor Toy-Palace has the 3.75" Black Series line on pre-order with an October availability date. (Or is that online shop using an American distributor to secure theirs?) Lots of questions have now been raised. But click through for the proof of the latest news we discovered, complete with information on the line, pricing and availability.

UPDATE: Our good friend James from JediNews.co.uk has confirmed that Black Series is definitely coming to the UK. We are still looking into why Previews has listed them with availability in North America only. Stay tuned.

We are continuing our Gentle Giant Visual Guide marathon by another follow-on update to the daily Research Droids Review. Click below to check out the Anakin Skywalker and Sebulba Mini Bust set.

Angry About Angry Birds.... This One Is Cutthroat!

Posted by Paul | May 29, 2013 at 02:56 PM ET |

Really Hasbro?! So, are Angry Birds for kids or collectors? You can't have it both ways. How in the world could you not do this for The Vintage Collection, but Angry Birds gets this glory? Not fair. I cry "fowl". (Yes – misspelling and pun intended.) Special thanks to our friends at Yakface.com for alerting us to this travesty and ruining our day.

UPDATE: Dear Lord! Look at what people are charging on eBay for it?! Don't fall for this people!

Review: Anakin Skywalker And Sebulba - Mini Busts

Posted by Paul | May 29, 2013 at 06:21 AM ET |

We aren't the biggest fans of Mini Bust two-packs because the cost of them never seems to average out right. A two-pack should imply some sort of savings (in our eyes), but in the case of Anakin Skywalker And Sebulba, it seems collectors are being taken for a ride. Because of their smaller size, releaseing them separately for around $50 each would have felt more appropriate in our eyes at least. Besides, only one of of the two in this set feels worthy of your money. Discover this and more in our Research Droids Reviews today! Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! Get A Goodwill Gamorrean Guard While Giving Graciously....

Posted by Paul | May 28, 2013 at 07:00 PM ET |

Yeah, that alliteration was even too much for me! There is an auction on ShopGoodwill.com that has a carded TVC Gamorrean Guard figure along with a whole bunch of loose miscellaneous Star Wars stuff. The auction bids are still low. If you're interested, you have until May 30th to place a bid. Special thanks to JTA moderator Paul B. for the head's up.

Star Wars (The Old Republic) produced some of the best Star Wars "mini-movies" since the OT graced the screen, and heavily featured is Shae Vizla, bounty hunter. 30 Years of Return of the Jedi! Happy Anniversary!

Posted by Chuck | May 25, 2013 at 06:39 AM ET |

It's hard to believe it has been 30 years since the close of the Original Trilogy! In 1983 we eagerly anticipated the release of the "final" Star Wars film. I recall vividly sitting there in the theater during the opening crawl hardly believing the moment had arrived, and that bittersweet feeling when it ended wondering if I would ever see another Star Wars film. Now, 30 years later, we eagerly anticipate the release of the film that will follow Return of the Jedi. Strange how things work out! click on the banner below to celebrate 30 years of Jedi, from the team at Jedi Temple Archives!

Posted by Paul | May 23, 2013 at 06:27 AM ET |

The Original Trilogy Collection Princess Leia (in her slave outfit) is proof that super-articulation isn't isn't needed for every action figure. A mixed media figure, she sport soft-goods, metal and corn silk details. While she is only a repack (or slight repaint depending upon your point of view), she looks fantastic in the OTC packaging. Review: Luke Skywalker [Jedi Knight] - OTC - OTC #06

Posted by Paul | May 22, 2013 at 06:11 AM ET |

How can a figure with 14 points of articulation be so bad? We actually say that somewhat affectionately about The Original Trilogy Collection's Luke Skywalker [as Jedi Knight] figure. The packaging is great, and the likeness isn't terrible, but the articulation is seemingly pointless. See what we mean in our Research Droids Reviews today. Why You Need To Study The Sky Guy Paradox

Posted by Paul | May 20, 2013 at 07:13 PM ET |

I just found out that my pal Chris Swanski at BanthaSkull.com has the same disdain for Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones as I do. But perhaps more importantly, what I also didn't realize is that he's written another clever wiki entry on the topic of something he's deemed the Sky Guy Paradox which attempts to explain the phenomena of how characters from Episode II look inexplicably 10 years older (and what I think it significantly more than that) than they should in Episode IV. Before you accidentally interpret this post as some sort of one-sided bromance, click through to learn about the Sky Guy Paradox. Brilliant! (And VERY entertaining!)

Review: 21 Days Of The OT: Day 18: Snaggletooth - Jumbo Kenner

Posted by Paul | May 18, 2013 at 07:51 AM ET |

There is no universal agreement as to whom the Snaggletooth action figure is meant to represent. Is this Takeel? Is this Zutton? Is this Rachalt Hyst? Some even believe Snaggletooth is an amalgamation of all three! Kenner used a picture of Rachalt Hyst on the packaging, but it goes without saying that the intent of all vintage Kenner figures was to mirror them from the films and not The Star Wars Holiday Special. So it's very likely that Snaggletooth just suffered the same costume, accuracy and aesthetics issues as Hammerhead and Walrus Man did, etc. Still, some collectors feel otherwise. What do you think? Stay closely engaged with us as we continue to visit some recently released collectibles in this line in our Research Droids Reviews. Gentle Giant Ltd. surprised us all when they announced they had plans to reproduce a replica of the Cantina Adventure Set for the Jumbo Vintage Figures line. It's not an exact replica, but it's pretty darn close. See it from every angle and with all four Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures for which it was designed. (For the record, this playset came without any figures.) Stay closely engaged with us as we continue to visit some recently released collectibles in this line in our Research Droids Reviews. Review: 21 Days Of The OT: Day 16: Walrus Man - Jumbo Kenner

Posted by Paul | May 16, 2013 at 07:51 AM ET |

He has been called everything from "Butt Face" to "Ponda Baba" but you probably know him best as Walrus Man. No matter what you deem his name to be, he may be the most inaccurate Kenner action figure from the entire 1978-1985 run (save for the characters with the obvious name change errors). Gentle Giant Ltd. was sure to bring all of his inaccuracies forward to the Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures line and he looks fantastic. Stay closely engaged with us as we continue to visit some recently released Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures in our Research Droids Reviews. 6 Inch Black Series: New Life For Star Wars Collecting Or Not?

Posted by Paul | May 15, 2013 at 06:31 PM ET |

Hopefully you were able to partake (or at the very least read the discussions) in our very "heated" debates about the 3.75" Black Series and Saga Legends lines coming out this Fall. The topic at this point has been rather exhausted, so now it's time to talk about the 6" Black Series line, perhaps the most controversial line of all. Introducing an all-new scale is a very dicey thing. With it comes more risks than anything else. To be fair, it brings collectors more details and articulation, but will it engage the amount of collectors it needs to sustain itself? Will four new figures at a time be enough to maintain interest? Will they expect to sell the same four figures for months on end? (Because that AIN'T gonna work.) Let's look at what's definitely coming and then for fun speculate on what might be coming. (more....)

Review: 21 Days Of The OT: Day 15: Hammerhead - Jumbo Kenner

Posted by Paul | May 15, 2013 at 05:43 AM ET |

It's our opinion that one of the biggest omissions to The Vintage Collection was Momaw Nadon. But have no fear because Gentle Giant Ltd. has released a one-sixth scaled version of Hammerhead and placed him in "vintage styled" packaging. Review: 21 Days Of The OT: Day 14: Greedo - Jumbo Kenner

Posted by Paul | May 14, 2013 at 05:56 AM ET |

It's not easy being Greedo, a character we love to hate and one of the first bounty hunters we ever saw. The vintage Kenner action figure of him wasn't 100% accurate, but we didn't care in 1979 and we don't care today. Thankfully Gentle Giant Ltd. doesn't care either and happily added him to the Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures line! Stay closely engaged with us as we visit some recently released Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures in our Research Droids Reviews. A Concerned Look At The Upcoming Black Series 3.75 Scaled Line

Posted by Paul | May 13, 2013 at 10:52 AM ET |

Is the Black Series line already doomed to fail? There are still no American pre-orders to be had yet and collectors are becoming increasingly anxious about the first couple of case assortments, especially the inaugural wave. In the meantime, let's take a quick look at what is coming to the newly hailed Black Series 3.75" line, the extremely disappointing replacement to The Vintage Collection. Click through for more....

A Sarcastic Look At The Rebirth Of Saga Legends

Posted by Paul | May 13, 2013 at 10:20 AM ET |

There are still no American pre-orders to be had yet, but let's take a quick look at what is coming to the newly revitalized (and dumbed-down) Saga Legends line. Click through for more....

It appears that Gentle Giant Ltd. tried very hard to give collectors the most accurate version of Yoda, The Jedi Master in one-sixth scale. For those of you who don't know, this was the new name Yoda got when he was placed on a Return Of The Jedi card back. But his figure also went through a drastic metamorphosis, not just the card back. Sadly Gentle Giant missed a couple of important details. Stay closely with us as we visit some recently released Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures in our Research Droids Reviews. Review: 21 Days Of The OT: Day 11: Stormtrooper - VOTC

Posted by Paul | May 11, 2013 at 07:22 AM ET |

The views expressed here about the VOTC Stormtrooper are solely those of the author, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Jedi Temple Archives. The VOTC Stormtrooper is one of the most overrated figures of all time. Why so many collectors fell for it escapes us. Utterly useless below the waist, a Stormtrooper action figure MUST have ball-jointed hips to be useful. We continue our analysis on this annoying figure as we revisit the first 12 of nearly two dozen action figures that served as forefathers to the incredible The Vintage Collection. It's all in our Research Droids Reviews today. Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Posted by Paul | May 10, 2013 at 05:32 AM ET |

Review: 21 Days Of The OT: Day 8: Yoda - VOTC

Posted by Paul | May 08, 2013 at 05:38 AM ET |

The "Vintage" Original Trilogy Collection Yoda action figure was an admirable attempt to mirror it after the figure from the eighties, but not all went right with it. Another figure that collectors like more for its packaging than the actual figure, see our assessment of Yoda. What A Black Series Jabba The Hutt Might Look Like....

Posted by Paul | May 07, 2013 at 01:00 PM ET |

JTA friend John Mc. alerts us to a custom Black Series scaled Jabba The Hutt and play-set at Amaro Customs. How awesome would it be if Hasbro delved into something of this magnitude for the heightened scale this line brings? While there are some definite likeness and scaling issues, check it out to see a "what if" that Hasbro should indeed set out to manufacture in the newly developed line. Pay special note to the articulated Salacious Crumb. There has got to be some surprising companion pieces (like this) made or this line doesn't have a prayer.

Review: 21 Days Of The OT: Day 7: Lando Calrissian - VOTC

Posted by Paul | May 07, 2013 at 07:41 AM ET |

The Lando Calrissian The "Vintage" Original Trilogy Collection figure is underappreciated. OK, so it has swivel elbows, but the figure's lower body movement is incredible and can attain more impressive poses that many other super-articulated figures, even those with ball-jointed hips. See why you need to overlook the swivel articulation and appreciate this figure for what it brings to the table. Join us in revisiting the first 12 of nearly two dozen action figures that served as forefathers to the incredible The Vintage Collection. It's all in our Research Droids Reviews today. How Much Longer Will Star Wars Collecting Be This Abysmal?

Posted by Paul | May 06, 2013 at 11:18 PM ET |

I have been quiet for a while now, so I feel it's time to sigh audibly enough for you to hear me again. I don't condone swearing, but my very good friend John McCartney just recently spouted "How many [expletive] The Phantom Menace figures did Hasbro make?" It wasn't meant to be humorous. And he said it expecting me to give him a straight answer, yet I found it difficult not to chuckle because his succinct assessment is really the nuts and bolts of this whole mess. I have to wonder the same exact thing.... (read more)

Facebook Sneak Peek: Jumbo PGM Exclusive Yoda [Brown Snake]

Posted by Paul | May 06, 2013 at 07:39 PM ET |

Check out a special Facebook Sneak Peek of the "just arrived" Yoda, The Jedi Master [Brown Snake] PGM exclusive Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figure. It's pretty cool in general. It comes packaged on a Return Of The Jedi card back (which is only for the exclusive version) and brown snake, as well as intentionally mismatched hands and feet. Gentle Giant Ltd. may have missed the boat here however. While this error version did exist (the mismatching), Kenner eventually released a corrected verison of the brown snake Yoda where his head color does match his hands and feet. So we're slightly disappointed that they didn't go with the corrected version instead. Also, there were two different types of brown snakes. One was plastic like the orange version, but then they changed the material and the second verison was rubbery. Guess which one PGMs get with this release?! The last error that actually bugs us a bit is that they used the wrong color cane. The "brown snake" Yoda came with a dark brown cane. This one comes with the lighter "orange snake" version. Too many mistakes for an expensive item like this!

Review: 21 Days Of The OT: Day 5: See-Threepio (C-3PO) - VOTC

Posted by Paul | May 05, 2013 at 04:15 AM ET |

OK, so maybe See-Threepio (C-3PO) isn't the greatest action figure ever made. That doesn't mean we understand why he gets a ton of unnecessary flack. An admirable effort, this version of the protocol droid looks incredible as far as deco is concerned, but so many collectors are unwilling to accept that because he doesn't come with 14 points of articulation. May the fourth be with you! Is there a more perfect figure to celebrate Star Wars Day than Luke Skywalker as he appeared in the very first Star Wars film? The most super-articulated version of Luke Skywalker up to that point, Hasbro indeed attempted to make this the consummate Luke Skywalker action figure, but it has one or two issues that need tweaking. Review: 21 Days Of The OT: Day 2: Han Solo - VOTC

Posted by Paul | May 02, 2013 at 06:07 AM ET |

Hopefully you were part of the fun discussion with the Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi figure yesterday, but if not then be sure not to miss the banter today. Join us in revisiting the first 12 of nearly two dozen action figures that served as forefathers to the incredible The Vintage Collection. We continue with Han Solo which is easily the best VOTC figure of the bunch. It's so good that it hasn't aged in almost 10 years! Still definitive even today, it was only made better by its gorgeous packaging! See this all and more in our Research Droids Reviews today. Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! As always, you can also send your own personal review requests via email if you'd like to see something that we didn't cover yet.

Review: 21 Days Of The OT: Day 1: Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi - VOTC

Posted by Paul | May 01, 2013 at 05:33 AM ET |

Join us in revisiting the first 12 of nearly two dozen action figures that served as forefathers to the incredible The Vintage Collection. First up is Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi, perhaps the weakest of the dozen. An admirable effort and fair update, it wasn't however anywhere near definitive status. Its selling point? The wonderful packaging! Here is hoping Hasbro will give us the 2009 TLC version in "vintage styled" packaging one day! See this all in our Research Droids Reviews today. Feel free to leave your own thoughts in our comments section, vote in the poll or even leave comments about it on our Facebook page. Click the banner below for the direct link to the review! As always, you can also send your own personal review requests via email if you'd like to see something that we didn't cover yet.
