These two Imperial troopers find themselves in trouble when they encounter a couple of Ewoks and one giant Wookiee. The unlucky driver is knocked unconscious by Widdle Warrick, Wunka and Chewbacca. The gunner fares no better: he is unceremoniously tossed out of the vehicle by the trio.

Collectors pretty much clamored in unison that one ball that Hasbro dropped for The Vintage Collection basic figure lineup was adding the AT-ST Driver from 2010’s SW [SOTDS] Attack On Hoth TARGET exclusive as a single carded figure. This incredibly detailed and super-articulated action figure was eagerly anticipated in 2010 and once we realized it exceeded our expectations, many of us probably would have bet our collections that Hasbro would have slotted him into The Vintage Collection the following year as a no-brainer choice! But even with a 2011 San Diego Comic Con exclusive (The Revenge Of The Jedi [Death Star II] set) and chase variations all centered around the Revenge/Return Of The Jedi film, the poor AT-ST Driver figure was nowhere to be found. Little did we know though that Hasbro was working on an Ultimate Battle Pack that would have included an AT-ST vehicle, two Ewok figures and two AT-ST Driver action figures. The Ultimate Battle Pack never happened, but all five individual items have finally been released in one form of another thanks to retailer Kmart who stepped up to the plate to deliver these fine exclusive in the 2012 phase of The Vintage Collection. Just like the Ewok Scouts, the Endor AT-ST Crew is just as good and now sport all-new portraits based on the actual characters in the film. This duo is brilliant and one of the bets decisions Hasbro ever made for an exclusive. You’ll be able to buy these in multiples and quickly establish an AT-ST Driver army.

Director Richard Marquand and producer Robert Watts played the AT-ST Driver and AT-ST Gunner respectively as cameos in Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi. Their characters, Major Marquand and Lieutenant Watts respectively, have now been forever immortalized as action figures and we have to admit that the likenesses are very impressive. Hopefully Hasbro is proud of their efforts because this duo is certainly one of the finest releases in The Vintage Collection, even if Hasbro has been unable to find the perfect opportunity to release an AT-ST Driver in The Vintage Collection basic figure lineup as of yet. The sculpts as you know are super-articulated. The inclusion of these figures’ particular ball-jointed waists help them achieve poses that most other figures also with ball-jointed torsos cannot. It must be due to the design of it because it looks different than others we have seen in the basic figure line up to this point. The ball-joints are smaller than we are used to seeing and it appears as if they’re double-ball-jointed, although we don’t want to say that’s the case conclusively. It certainly looks that way to us. The legs are thinner and more agile than other troopers in the line and the ball-joints in the knees and ankles allow the legs to freely move in multiple directions despite a one-planed joint in each other hips. It’s quite a brilliant design we must admit.

There was some unrest about the packaging art showing these troopers wearing different suspenders and holsters than what’s included in the box. Hasbro answered our question on this at Celebration VI and we were told that the wrong parts were included on those figures during the photography process and belonged to an undeveloped Comic Packs character that right now won’t be released. So, the included AT-ST Driver and AT-ST Gunner figures are correctly outfitted. The head sculpts on these figures are very impressive. Both look like their respective actors in the film. What’s more, Hasbro sculpted all-new helmets (with goggles in the down position permanently) and they fit over both their head perfectly with a snugness we only dream about in the basic figure line. Lastly, both figures come with E-11 blaster rifles which also fit tightly into their hands. The Hasbro Star Wars basic figure line for 2013 is the Legacy Collection and Build A Droid is back. Hasbro said that they will be coming back to The Vintage Collection in a few years and once they do they plan to start finishing off the original Kenner vintage figures in that line look. That is their goal and we honestly cannot wait until it comes to completion. In the meantime be sure to enjoy the Endor AT-ST Crew (Special Action Figure Set). Not too many of us expected it would going to be this easy to army-build AT-ST Driver action figures for $7.50 each which is a 25% discount when compared to what a TVC figure would have cost us. So we count ourselves blessed.
