Darth Maul, the evil Sith Lord, prepares for battle with the Jedi by dueling with lethal attack droids. Darth Maul's hatred of the Jedi fuels his desire to perfect his skill with his double-bladed lightsaber.

Getting Star Wars action figures based on conceptual artwork is really nothing new from Hasbro. In fact, only three years into the modern line, Hasbro produced and Expanded Universe lineup which included three vehicles (and corresponding pack-in figures) based on concept art of the Original Trilogy. And the Power Of The Jedi line is giving collectors new concept art based action figures, but from characters based on the Prequel Trilogy. Darth Maul already got his own concept art figure in the Power Of The Jedi basic figure line when it was released as 2001’s POTJ Darth Maul (Sith Apprentice). And since that figure was such a huge success in the basic figure line, Hasbro decided to create a new take on a conceptual version of Darth Maul in the Power Of The Jedi Deluxe format. This time shirtless, Darth Maul (With Sith Attack Droid) Deluxe set is destined to win the heart of collectors because not only does Darth Maul sport a fantastic all-new sculpt, the included Sith Attack Droid adds additional play value you wouldn’t have otherwise.

We’re serious. The Darth Maul figure in this set is incredible. He only comes with eight points of swivel articulation, but the sculpt is so incredible that we bet that the minimal articulation won’t last long being a bone of contention with you. It’s truly amazing. Hasbro is able to achieve such stunning detail with a pre-posed figures that they just can’t seem to capture in the more articulated types, or action figures with more static poses. But the Darth Maul figure from this set not only scores high marks for a dynamic sculpt, but the paint operations are equally impressive. Just look at Darth Maul from head to to and look at how well the paint job brings out the attitude in the figure. Of course a great sculpt has been tooled here, but it’s the paint operations that bring the sculpt to life. If Hasbro could translate the details into this sculpt into a more articulated body, collectors would then have the penultimate Darth Vader action figure for their collections. But they’ll probably not think about a future version because this one will capture their attention.

Darth Maul comes with a double-bladed lightsaber. It splits into two halves and reconnects into one lightsaber as you desire. Obviously this gives you a lot more options with the figure. Also included is a Sith Attack Droid which is a DZ-70 Fugitive Tracker Droid that was first introduced in The Essential Guide to Droids book released in 1999. Hasbro added their own slant to it as no reference materials have surfaced that perefectly match this included droid’s exact appearance. It’s still a cool “extra” to help give the Darth Maul figure a Deluxe value MSRP of just under $10 nonetheless. The Sith Attack Droid breaks down into three separate pieces: the droid itself, a removable top antenna and a clear figure stand (which includes a pedal to simulate battle-damage). When completely set up, we have to admit that the entire set looks pretty darn fantastic. Everything looks to be in perfect proportion with each other, and the shining star of the set, Darth Maul, looks even better when battling “something else” in any display setup you choose. The Power Of The Jedi Deluxe line is really impressing collectors. Hasbro is thinking outside of the box, picking concepts from really awesome scenes in Star Wars and the Expanded Universe. And for less than $10 you’re getting quality toys.
