Jawa

General Analysis

Almost as if it were yesterday, I remember having multiple Jawas in my young Star Wars collection in the 80s. Because I missed most of the toys released under the “Star Wars” label, many great vehicles like the Radio Controlled Jawa Sandcrawler lacked in my house growing up. It didn’t matter all that much to me. We had enough Star Wars toys and typically I was consumed with my favorite characters. When it came to the Jawa, instead of recreating scenes from A NEW HOPE, I put it in my Jabba’s Palace scenes. My favorite play option was to put a Jawa behind Jabba The Hutt with a paper leaf (made by me) taped to a pipe cleaner so the Jawa could utilize it as a fan. I loved this figure. Something about the soft-goods captured me and wouldn’t let go. I didn’t know anything about a “vinyl cape” Jawa at the time, and it didn’t matter. It was great to display and play with this creature with the brown cloth cape on or off the figure. And I loved how it gave the action figure two distinctly different looks. I also loved his ionization blaster, but we simply called it a "Jawa blaster" back then. Throughout the years I managed to accrue quite a few of these filthy creatures. I think it’s one of Kenner’s best efforts and the modern Hasbro line hasn’t come that close to remaking this figure in definitive status yet. Sure, there has been a ton of modern Hasbro Jawa action figures throughout the years and some of them are fine toy specimens. But until they make a full cloth robe that goes over the figure just like the 1978 release, I won’t accept that we have a complete modern counterpart yet!
