Often, Hasbro releases confusing retailer exclusives. Perhaps the greatest case in point of this or the Revenge Of The Sith line is the KB Toys exclusive Collector Pack. Why would collectors need a set of unchanged figures packaged together when they’re all readily available on store shelves with extra parts. Is it the reduced priced that makes this exclusive more attractive. But what about sacrificing parts for lower costs? The set features eight Collection 2 figures from the Revenge Of The Sith basic figure line, but this time the figures come without their respective environmental display stands. There are no other changes present here with the figures aside from this. Also, the group of characters they decided to pack together is odd at best. What is the theme here? Are the contents here overproduced action figures that they don’t want to send to stores as basic figures? Or is there a direct purpose for these nine action figures to be packaged together? To make things more confusing, Hasbro added the Darth Vader figure from the Star Wars “Saga” [Phase III] line that was originally a Toys R Us exclusive. Darth Vader celebrates something thing as evidenced by its silver color, but we’re at a loss on what it is.
Interestingly, two different figures were originally intended for this release. When first revealed, the Collector Pack featured two figures that didn’t make it to the final version of the set. Firstly, the red 2005 ROTS Royal Guard (III 23) was chosen instead of the blue Senate Guard. Interestingly, the red-colored figure brightened up the set beautifully, and we feel it was a mistake that they made this change. More intriguing, however, Hasbro was going to add an “all-new” silver Darth Vader in this set by utilizing the sculpt of 2002’s SW [S - P1] Darth Vader (Bespin Duel) (‘02 #30) figure. Perhaps the action feature and loose joints made this choice less attractive as they got closer to manufacturing this set in the factories in China. The frame of this Darth Vader sculpt looks more aesthetically pleasing. The Darth Vader figure they used for this set is an older, kit-bashed figure that utilizes parts from multiple figures, but the frame is a tad too chunky. Regardless, we don’t feel we needed to see this figure released again in the modern Star Wars line. It’s out of place here. And there were so many other choices they could have put in this set instead that would have made more sense.
Included in this set are Jedi Master Luminara Unduli, Sith Lord Count Dooku, Royal Guard (the blue Senate Guard), Jedi Master Kit Fisto, Senator Bail Organa, protocol droid C-3PO, Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi, and Chancellor Palpatine (as a prisoner of General Grievous on his Invisible Hand). There’s no doubt this is a great collection of action figures. But we don’t understand the theme here or the purpose of combining these figures. Collection 2 action figures in the Revenge Of The Sith line means they are free of the action features intended for kids, and are more collector-friendly. But collectors have purchased all of these figures multiple times as basic figures, and we don’t think the inclusion of a silver Darth Vader is going to be a motivating factor to repurchase all of these figures. Granted, this set offers nine action figures for $39.99. You save $5 by buying them in this set. However, we feel that if Hasbro added the “all-new” silver Darth Vader figure instead of a straight repack, more collectors would show interest in this set. We feel a bit badly that KB Toys got offered this exclusive. It’s not a fantastic concept, but we imagine that it will serve some purpose within the collecting community.
