One of nine Gamorrean Guards in Jabba the Hutt's palace, Gartogg is renowned for his particularly dense brand of stupidity - even for a Gamorrean. He works as a mindless enforcer of Jabba's orders, and even his fellow guards poke fun at his shortcomings. Gartogg had a knack for stumbling across the slain bodies of murder victims and carried the rotting corpses around with him, even after he left Jabba's palace to work in a smuggling ring.

From the planet Gamorr, the Gamorrean species consists of brutish, porcine humanoids who maintain a feudal level of technology and tolerate a remarkable amount of violence in their everyday activities. Interstellar procedures programs for visiting Gamorr consist of one line: DO NOT VISIT GAMORR.

Though Gamorreans have been introduced to modern blaster and weapon technology, they prefer to hack and slash with axes, swords and maces. They only use modern weaponry when off-planet. Most Gamorreans have green skin, pig-like snouts and yellowed tusks protruding from jowled cheeks. These complement the small, yellow horns the Gamorreans have growing from the top of their heads. Jabba the Hutt was known to use dim-witted Gamorreans as enforcers and bodyguards, outfitting them with leather and metal uniforms.

We feel we’ve been mildly deceived by Sideshow Collectibles. First of all, we were very surprised to see a second Gamorrean Guard get announced so close to the generic version. And second, Gartogg ended up not looking that much differently from the plain Gamorrean Guard. Gartogg (Gamorrean Guard) from their Scum & Villainy collection of one-sixth scaled figures is cool of course. But he may suit you better as an army builder for your 12” Jabba The Hutt display. This is certainly a great way to do it (albeit very expensive), but if you’re looking to bring a fresh new character into this already very expensive 12” collection, you’re really not getting enough new to make this completely worth your while. Gartogg is a cool Gamorrean Guard of course. He has a broken right horn (although we’re not sure how screen accurate this characteristic is – more on that in a moment) which gives him a unique personality. His mouth is also partially opened with his lips quivering in anger and it’s a great look for a Gamorrean Guard. But maybe this expression would have been better utilized on a generic character instead of a specific one. Gartogg definitely looks different than the regular Gamorrean Guard figure, but it may not be enough to make it a definite purchase for your collection.

As you already know, the base body that Sideshow Collectibles created for the Gamorrean Guard is incredible. It isn’t as articulated as you may expect. And it only has a fraction of the articulation of the figures in the Militaries Of Star Wars line. But when you have to make a specific body type for an alien species, it’s a time to revisit how a 12” figure gets approached. Thankfully for the Gamorrean Guard species, less articulation is definitely more. The figure can stand unassisted and there is the perfect amount of movement to allow him to hold his weapons in a realistic fashion. Clearly a great deal of time and effort went into the engineering of this figure to ensure a quality collectible for longtime Star Wars 12” collectors. You get the same detailed uniform complete with faux fur skirt and shorts. And the same armory like the gauntlets and shoulder “pads” have been brought back for Gartogg as well. Like we’ve stated, Gartogg really doesn’t bring anything new to the table. He’s a very expensive army builder and one you may or may not need in your collection. We think he came about too soon from the generic Gamorrean Guard.

Gartogg comes with a weapon that the regular Gamorrean Guard did not. You get a long-handled axe which just so happens to be one of our most favorite accessories for a Gamorrean and it’s quite fitting for Gartogg. We looked for a Gamorrean Guard in Jabba’s palace that had a broken left horn and were unable to find one. Unless we missed it altogether, we think that the broken horn maybe inspired from some Expanded Universe story. On the figure’s packaging, Sideshow has placed an image of the Gamorrean that became a victim of the rancor on the box. We assume they are trying to tell us this is Gartogg. But this Gamorrean in this very memorable scene had two complete horns. Despite this, we love the broken horn very much and we don’t think Gartogg would have been the same without it. We understand the need for Sideshow Collectibles to reuse this unique body mold, but perhaps it could have been spaced out a bit more. Still, it’s cool to get two unique Gamorrean Guard 12” figures just months apart from each other. It’s definitely a little bit bittersweet.
