Rey is a resilient survivor, a scavenger toughened by a lifetime of dealing with the cutthroats of the harsh desert world of Jakku.
Well, we have some good and bad news for you. The good news is that Hasbro has released a pretty fine version of Rey (Jakku) for 3.75” super-articulated collectors. The bad news is that it is technically screen specific to when she is fully garbed with a mask and gloves (like she is when she is riding her fudgesicle speeder). Now, as of her release, we haven’t seen the full film yet, so anything is possible, but we’re chalking this up to an oversight right now because Hasbro didn’t fully follow the same approach they did as The Black Series [Phase III] Rey (Jakku) & BB-8 (02) 6” figure set, which is a shame. The Walmart exclusive Rey (Jakku) comes with gloved hands. The 6” version does not. So, no matter how you display the 3.75” version, she is always going to be wearing gloves, whether she is wearing her desert “disguise” or not. So, we find this disappointing. And aside from a few questionable deco choice, we can assure you that Hasbro has developed a splendid action figure interpretation of Rey (Jakku) that is sure to please fans (if you can get over the “issue” at hand here). With a wealth of premium articulation, correct proportions and a likeness that has impressed us greatly, Rey (Jakku) makes us want to learn as much as we can about this new main character in the Star Wars universe and how her role will affect the film and all of the other related components of The Force Awakens.
Rey (Jakku) comes with an impressive 26 points of articulation. She has been graced with ball-jointed wrists and hips and we have always felt that these were two basic premium points of articulation that Hasbro neglected for so many years, including our favorite line The Vintage Collection. It is refreshing to see Star Wars characters get the royal treatment in this light. Because these extra points of articulation truly make a world of difference. Rey (Jakku), even despite her inhibiting skirt, can be posed in a multitude of ways all thanks to the articulation system this figure has. The combination of parts and joints offer the figure a wealth of movement, something that is required for lovers of super-articulation. So many action figures with super-articulation in the past didn’t really offer much in terms of positioning the figure. But that isn’t the case here. Rey (Jakku) can really move! We’re thrilled with the tooling here. And for all intents and purposes Rey (Jakku) looks better than 2015’s TFA Rey (Starkiller Base) Build A Weapon figures as well as The Black Series [Phase III] Rey (Jakku) & BB-8 (02) 6” version. That being said, Hasbro decorated her rosy cheeks with some “dot matrix” type of effect and we have to admit that it came off as a bit jarring, especially in high resolution photography. She looks great with the rest of the Walmart exclusive figures and we hope that these are just the beginning for a supposedly long and fruitful line.
If you recall, the battle damage markings on most of the clones in The Saga Collection was approached in a similar fashion. Recall 2006’s TSC Clone Trooper (442nd Siege Battalion) (SAGA 057) and 2006’s TSC Clone Trooper (Fifth Fleet Security) (SAGA 059) figures to see what we mean. Unfortunately Rey (Jakku)’s cheeks have been given the same look and texture. It may have been better if Hasbro just neglected it altogether. Still, to the human eye it doesn’t come off as that terrible, so we’re going to give this a pass because the rest of the figure is really well done (save for the gloved hands – why didn’t they include interchangeable hands here?). Rey (Jakku) comes with a nice dose of accessories. They include a staff (with strap), a removable backpack (with functioning “buckle” feature) and of course the interchangeable masked portrait/scarf combination piece. The interchangeable head sculpt is simple, but looks nice. It is so nice to have this, but if we are being technical here, this is the “correct” portrait for the figure at the moment. Really the unmasked portrait should be considered the interchangeable portrait accessory here. While clothed in this fashion, Rey (Jakku) can straddle 2015’s TFA Rey’s Speeder (Jakku) in a believable (and slightly awkward) way. Whatever your opinion, it looks a whole lot better than the pack-in figure that came with it. In conclusion, Rey (Jakku) is excellent. If they could have just give us ungloved hands, she would have been almost perfect.
