By the time the 30th anniversary of Star Wars hit in 2007, there was one character that was being made by every single company who had an official license with Lucasfilm Ltd. That character was the Shadow Stormtrooper. Yes, 2007 was also the year of Ralph McQuarrie but it was also a time where many companies were focusing on the Expanded Universe as well. One of the first EU characters attempted by many licenses was the Shadow Stormtrooper. Hasbro made one. Real Action Heroes made one. And the list goes on and on and on to the point where it became a bit overwhelming. Medicom Toy also produced a Shadow Stormtrooper Vinyl Collectible Doll and for us it may be our most favorite high-end collectible version on this character. There is something extraordinarily charming about the super-deformed shape and size of the Vinyl Collectible Dolls line, but it just looks that much better with a Shadow Stormtrooper.

Although super-deformed, the head sculpt of these figures is about one-quarter scale (without any exaggerated features). Sure, the head sculpt is too big for the body, but there is nothing out of scale with the actual head itself. The detail of the Shadow Stormtrooper is quite remarkable. These are definitely expensive collectibles, but you also get what you pay for here. Made from a slightly pliable vinyl material, the Shadow Stormtrooper VCD holds its shape very well, and its features like the visor, the contour of the helmet and even the holster are beautifully executed. Collectors will indeed be impressed with how much art these Japanese collectibles have been given. The base black vinyl is shiny and smooth. You can tell that high quality materials have been used to cast these figures. To top it off, the accentuating details like the silver paint used to decorate the visor and other parts has been expertly applied. You’d think a well-seasoned artist has painted it.

Medicom Toy has always been clever when it comes to setting edition sizes for their collectibles. Because the Shadow Stormtrooper is a 2007 release, its edition size has been limited to 2007 pieces. This may be more than the collecting community will need as a niche group of collectors are into these very unique Star Wars collectibles. But with every thing so concentrated on Blackhole Stormtroopers and Shadow Stormtroopers, this may interest those who normally don’t collect these figures generally. Usually reserved for exclusives, its nice to see a “general release” version of it that should be easy to attain by all that want it. Complete with ten points of swivel articulation, the Shadow Stormtrooper can be posed in a variety of ways. The figure looks great no matter how you situate it. The Shadow Stormtrooper comes with an exaggerated and large E-11 blaster which fits beautifully in one or both hands; the choice it yours.
