Start or expand your own collection with a 40TH ANNIVERSARY LEGACY PACK! Now you can have fabulous fun reliving the movie STAR WARS.

Features display stand with backcard to showcase 40th Anniversary figures! (Darth Vader figure included. Additional figures each sold separately.)

The best way to describe The Black Series [Star Wars 40] Legacy Pack (Special Edition Darth Vader) set is that Hasbro was looking to get forty bucks for their mostly new Darth Vader sculpt. OK, that’s definitely a bit brash, but what other logical reason could there to be to withhold the most popular character of the Star Wars saga back and include it in a pack with a display stand (made from cardboard and cheap plastic) and then slap an MSRP of double the value on it. But if you’re able to get beyond this, it’s really the only negative aspect of the Legacy Pack (Special Edition Darth Vader) set. In all honesty, this set is really a paltry offering for the 40th anniversary of Star Wars. Sure, it certainly has some powerfully nostalgic components to it that will certainly strum the heartstrings of longtime collectors – especially those who collected toys during the vintage Kenner era. But the theme also falls a bit flat. It’s not really an Early Bird Kit. And it’s not really that mail-away vintage Kenner display stand. Instead, it’s a hybrid of the two. This may or may not work for you. For us, our feelings lie somewhere in the middle of this spectrum. We appreciate the vintage nod, but it also falls short in many ways as well. More importantly, the distraction of the display stand will ultimately be moot because the included Darth Vader figure here is worthy of all the front and center attention.

Darth Vader is a tremendous upgrade from 2014’s TBS [P2] Darth Vader (#02) figure. Although the latter was based on his appearance from Return Of The Jedi, the removable helmet gimmick ended up working against the aesthetics of the figure. Ultimately it failed because Darth Vader should look a whole lot more like the evil Sith Lord he was in the films instead of a Droopy Dog from the cartoons. Hasbro reevaluated their approach to this classic Star Wars icon and form the most part started from the ground up to deliver a product that not only satisfies, but impressed. Darth Vader can almost be considered an all-new figure. But Hasbro did reuse the base parts of the arms and legs from the previous version and built upon it. However, Darth Vader’s torso and portrait are all new and they have never looked better. Based on his A New Hope (and we imagine Rogue One now) appearance, Darth Vader brings a semblance to The Black Series 6” line that just wasn’t present on the 2014 version. The figure isn’t bulky (which is a huge saving factor here). The draping is contained (although imperfect the soft-goods are a huge improvement). And the deco is about as perfect as one could get it (not that it’s hard to color Darth Vader). Overall, you’re left with a product that stands apart from some of the failed attempts The Black Series 6” line has brought us thus far. Darth Vader functions like a catalyst of sorts. If you’re not into the line yet, this may now be your staring up point.

Darth Vader is loaded with 27 points of articulation. As you know very well by now, a figure with this many points of articulation can pretty much to anything. What’s more, Darth Vader’s joints and nice and tight and he doesn’t move from his position once you situate him there. He comes with a lightsaber hilt and blade. And the nice part is that his hilt has a hook where you can hang it on his belt. This was been forever overlooked in the 3.75” scaled line, so 6” collectors should count themselves fortunate with this added feature. Hasbro has also updated the blade, thank goodness. Previously, lightsaber blades were much too flaccid and thin. But we noticed that Darth Vader’s lightsaber blade is thicker and more rigid. (Yes, we are sorry for the double entendre. It wasn’t intentional. But it was the most accurate way to describe it in our opinion.) Darth Vader comes in nice vintage-inspired Kenner packaging. While we don’t think the 6” figures work nearly as well in this revised card back as the 3.75” figures do, we appreciate the effort by Hasbro to return to this VERY important line looks. But until Hasbro gets 3.75” figures back into this format, it likely won’t serve too much purpose for the line. Overall, if you’re willing to shell out $40 for the Legacy Pack (Special Edition Darth Vader) set, we don’t believe you will be disappointed. You may have a small case of buyer’s remorse just for the price however.
