Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2)

Detailed Visual Analysis

Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2)

General Analysis

Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) was another figure that entered my collection a little bit later than most others. By the time I had become a young, obsessed collector, Kenner was deep into THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, line and the only version I found at retail was the Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) (with Sensorscope) figure. I do remember trading another Star Wars figure to get this version of Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) eventually, and I recall that the paper label around the body started to unpeel. Over time, my Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) figure was utterly void of the decal. I never felt this release looked all that much like our favorite astromech droid, but it is charming in its own way. Throughout my collecting years, I have been fortunate to find lovely samples of Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) where the decals are clean and undamaged, and the dome is shiny and unscratched. Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) is a classic action figure, but I don’t think it is one of Kenner’s best. It also has the distinction of being one of the first four Star Wars action figures ever produced.
