BB-BOO20 - Droid Factory

It’s that time of year again when Disney Parks releases their annual holiday droids to celebrate the various seasons. For 2020, the Droid Factory line releases BB-BOO20, an orange and green BB Unit that is a dead ringer for a pumpkin. If you’ve been collecting this line for a while, you know that 2017 was the year Disney’s Droid Factory line introduced the BB-8 unit in the 3.75” line. The figure didn’t come with many features nor articulation, but they designed a precise action figure that looked screen-accurate to the character. Since that time, Disney produced many other BB units for Disney Star Wars Entertainment throughout the years. Now, as part of Disney’s annual “holiday” lineup, the BB Unit Droid Factory tooling is once again utilized for the current year’s Halloween figure. The figure’s bio explains that BB-BOO20 is from Pasaana and lives among the Aki-Aki, whatever that means. But all of these “holiday” droids are “Expanded Universe” characters, meaning they may never be part of the official canon as far as Lucasfilm LTD. is concerned.

The BB-BOO20 tooling is like a Weeble. And as you know, they don’t fall down. Disney added a weighted ball that keeps BB-BOO20 grounded, no matter how much you throw it around. It will remain upright no matter how you pose it. We give credit to Disney for working that feature into the sculpt because it not only provides balance, but weight as well. There are no interchangeable arms or extremities with these figures. And there is no useful articulation here, aside from a swivel head. The droid also doesn’t come with any holiday props, which we find rather disappointing. Perhaps a patch of pumpkins would have gone over well. But nonetheless, BB-BOO20 received a stunning paint job. The two outer halves are solid orange. And if you split the two halves, you’ll find the “weighted” inner ball underneath. It provides gravity to the figure. Generally speaking, we’ve loved all of the figures in this line so far, and BB-BOO20 is no different. It doesn’t feel like you’re getting a lot of a toy for $12.99, but the figure is well-made regardless.

BB-BOO20 breaks down into four separate pieces. They include a head attachment (with barely movable antennae), two body halves, and the weighted gravity ball, which fits into the two halves like a carefully constructed puzzle. BB-BOO20 is unable to stand unassisted without the gold gravity ball inside of it. We’ve tried. Besides, the two halves don’t snap together without it either. You’re dependent on the gravity ball to make this a functional and put-together action figure. The ball itself is beautifully designed and comes with much detail etched into it and multiple paint operations and colors. Whether this ball is based on some images from a technical “making of” book or some Sequel Trilogy “behind the scenes” materials is something we don’t know. The “insides” of BB-BOO20 are believable and work well from that perspective. It’s just a shame the gravity ball prevents the figure from doing anything else meaningful in your collection.
