TESB Prototype Figures - Army Builders Take Notice!

Posted by Nick | January 11, 2009 at 11:16 PM ET

This week we got a sneak peek at The Empire Strikes Back wave of Basic Figures. But some recently posted prototype images have revealed some interesting details about some of the assortment!A number of prototype auctions were recently posted by eBay seller dreamcabmodel, and among them are some new views of four of the six figures in the upcoming wave of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK figures.

One of the two Ugnaughts we've seen is originally pictured with a work apron. But this new prototype image reveals that the apron is removable, and this Ugnaught includes a small toolbox similar to the one packed with the original vintage Ugnaught. It remains unclear however, if this Ugnaught will ship as part of a 2-pack or ship individually as a running change.

One of the stars of this wave is undoubtedly the Hoth Rebel Trooper. Troop building has become big business in Star Wars figure collecting, and this figure does not disappoint. The Hoth trooper is festooned with gear, including a blaster pistol, blaster rifle, trench blaster and backpack. But he may also include a removable hat as well.

But the topper? Hasbro seems poised for a running change with different headsculpts. The prototype image reveals two distinctly different headsculpts along with two different hats. This seems very reminiscent of 2006's Endor Rebel Trooper, which shipped in two different versions. One was a rendition of Colonel Cracken, and the other was an African American Endor trooper. This Hoth rebel appears to come in a clean shaven version with a scarf wrapped around the hat, and a version bearing a mustache but without the scarf.

Also on tap for this wave is a rendition of Luke Skywalker from the Rebel Medical frigate. The prototype is pictured without the softgood robe, but allows us to see the body and articulation. There is an access point for maintenance work on Luke's robotic hand. There is also a belt, lightsaber and what appears to be a communicator.

Rounding out this batch of images is an unpainted Princess Leia, also from the Rebel Medical frigate. It appears to be an accurate rendition of Leia as she oversees Luke's medical care. This image shows Leia with an Imperial blaster, but the promotional images show that Leia includes a Rebel blaster pistol. The production version will no doubt shed light on that inconsistency.
