Topic: Trading Cards

As a longtime collector (and design contributor) to non-sports trading cards, I was reluctant to embrace Topps’ new Star Wars Car Trader app. I’ve been collecting Star Wars trading cards my whole life, and I couldn’t imagine not being able to hold the physical cards in my hand. To me, there was something special about opening packs, sorting the cards and eventually putting them into protective sleeves. I didn’t want to give that up for “virtual” trading cards! It was after a friend showed me all different cards he had collected in the app, that I decided to take the plunge myself... (read more)

The app is free (there are in-app purchases, of course) and they give you 25,000 “Republic Credits” every day just for logging in. A virtual pack of cards averages between 5,000 - 10,000 credits.

What I love about this app, is the massive and diverse amount of card art available. The base cards feature characters, creatures, ships and locations from all movies and animated television shows. Some of the images are archive photos I have never seen before. Obscure aliens, behind the scenes images and costume reference pics are scattered throughout. Leading up to Rogue One, they’ve released incredible new images in a preview set.

Speaking of Rogue One, Topps have embraced the nostalgia for the new film (unlike a certain toy company) by releasing a new base set (series 4) in the classic Topps vintage style from the 70’s!

Beside the base set, there are “chase cards”, all with different odds of finding in a virtual “pack of cards”. The artwork on some of these chase cards is amazing, and the majority were commissioned/created just for this app. There are oil paintings, 8-bit caricatures, retro-line art, woodblock prints, typography and many many more. New artwork is added EVERY DAY. For someone like me who loves Star Wars artwork, it’s fantastic

One of the best features of the app is the ability to save the cards to the photo album on your phone. Then, you can text or email them to friends, or save them to your home computer. I use them to make great backgrounds for my phone and for my screen saver slideshow on my computer.

I may not be able to physically open packs or sort these cards, but I now have a wealth of Star Wars artwork at my fingertips at no real cost.

You can download the app free from iTunes or Google.

NOTE: The Lumpy vintage card is my own creation.

(We all know The Star Wars Holiday Special never really happened.)
