Several European governments have asked Disney to reduce the video quality for Disney+. The service will launch tomorrow in several major European countries, however, because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, several governments are afraid that above average usage of streaming services by people told to stay at home may congest the internet. Even though German internet providers reassured that there’s more than enough capacity, at least in Germany, Disney complied and the service will reduce the bitrate in Europe for the next few weeks. Furthermore, France asked Disney to postpone the launch of the streaming service. So now Disney+ will launch two weeks later in France.
Disney is not the only company to reduce the video bitrate in Europe, YouTube, Amazon Prime and Netflix also reduce bitrates. So you may get somewhat less than optimal video quality in Europe for the time being. Maybe some European countries need to upgrade their internet infrastructure. According to reports Switzerland is even considering to disable video streaming services in the country until further notice. At least that is not an option in the other European countries. If you watch videos on various streaming platforms in Europe you may see some artifacts here and there. It’s not you then, it’s the streaming service!
Covid-19, better known as the coronavirus, has the world firmly in its grip. And the Walt Disney Corporation is no exception here. Like all other entertainment companies Disney is facing stiff challenges, challenges that may, to a certain degree, also affect Star Wars. Movie releases get postponed, most theaters in the US are closed anyway, worldwide most countries have shut down all movie theaters, tv and streaming series productions are on hold, theme parks are closed, Disney cruises are shut down at least for another two weeks. But chances are the crisis won’t be over in two weeks and that whatever counter measures are in effect now will still be in effect in April and maybe even May and June. First analysts theorize that now may be the perfect time for Apple to buy Disney, Disney’s stock price is falling and it will most likely continue to fall. So what exactly is going on right now and what does it mean for us, the consumers? Click through for more details!

In what almost feels like Groundhog Day, website Geeks WorldWide broke the exclusive story yesterday that filming for the Cassian Andor Disney+ series will be pushed back several months. Tony Gilroy was hired a while ago to fix script issues and to direct several episodes. But now new script issues have surfaced and the filming date has been pushed back as result of that. Filming was to begin in June, no new date is known. However, only recently Diego Luna confirmed that filming will begin in 2020. One has to wonder why only The Mandalorian doesn’t seem to suffer from any production issues at all, while both Kenobi and Cassian Andor are plagued by script issues and delays.
Collider broke the exclusive story tonight! The Disney+ Kenobi series has been put on indefinite hold and the crew has been sent home for the time being. Click through for more!
UPDATE: Ewan McGregor talks about the production delay! He says the release date of the show will not be affected! Click through for his statement!

A new Star Wars rumor is circling the interwebs. Apparently, a bearded Jar Jar Binks may appear in the upcoming Kenobi Disney+ series! Nothing else is known, so take this with the usual grains of salt!
It has to be pointed out that Ahmed Best will be the host of a Star Wars quiz show on Disney+, so maybe Ahmed would be fine with portraying Jar Jar one more time? He did voice the character in the Clone Wars cartoon, which already had a somewhat more nuanced approach to the character. Would you look forward to seeing Jar Jar appear again in live action? Or would you rather never see him again? Also: how would Jar Jar fit in? Does Obi-Wan go to Naboo? It could be quite exciting to see Theed again. Or will Jar Jar travel to Tatooine? Leave your opinion in the comments! Movieweb has the full story!

There are 2 playsets that would be incredible additions to The Vintage Collection. One needs to be the Razorcrest, that much is clear, but the second might not be so obvious. I’ve taken some screenshots (not photos from my phone this time, yay!), and drew up a couple ideas for how these playsets could be brought to fruition. Click here to take a look!
Disney released their Q4 earnings report earlier today. Overall, it was a good quarter for Disney, their numbers are better than expected by analysts. Almost all segments see an earnings increase, while operating income has decreased, mostly because of associated costs for Hulu, Disney Plus and Twentieth Century Fox. Theme parks still have lower attendance than before, but average spending per consumer is up which resulted in increased earnings. In the merchandise licensing segment Star Wars was not mentioned at all, instead Toy Story and Frozen were mostly responsible for increased revenue.
With that out of the way let’s briefly talk about what Bob Iger had to say about Star Wars on Disney+ in the earnings call:
Star Wars has three television series, they are in varying forms of production and more in development for Disney Plus and Marvel has many more so, while in the Star Wars case, Star Wars 9 which comes out this December will be the last of the Skywalker Saga, and we’ll go into a hiatus for a few years before the next Star Wars feature there’ll be a lot of creative activity in the interim.
So while Iger didn’t provide any specifics, it seems we can expect more Star Wars series on Disney+ before we get a next movie. Nothing was said about what the series or the new movie(s) will be about. Nothing was said about Rian Johnson, Benioff & Weiss or Kevin Feige. But at least we now that more Star Wars series are in development. What other Star Wars series would you like to see on Disney+?
Variety has an exclusive scoop about the Cassian Andor Disney+ series on their website. They have learned that Tony Gilroy was hired by Lucasfilm to write and direct the pilot episode of the yet untitled Cassian Andor series, Gilroy is also said to direct a few more episodes. Gilroy will not be the showrunner, this is still supposed to be Stephen Schiff (he was previously the co-producer for The Americans). You may certainly remember Gilroy as the person who was hired to salvage Rogue One to great results. His work on Rogue One was so substantial that he received a writing credi. Gilroy is not a Star Wars fan, but that may not be a bad thing at all, he certainly knew how to fix the very messy state Rogue One was reportedly in. No release date for the Cassian Andor series is known, but it’s supposed to be some time in 2021.
More details for the upcoming Disney+ Kenobi series have been announced! Deborah Chow will direct the series and Hossein Amini will write the scripts. Executive producers will be Chow, Amini and Ewan McGregor, alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Tracey Seaward (she worked on The Queen, Philomena, Florence Foster Jenkins) and John Swartz (producer for Force Awakens, Rogue One and Solo).
Deborah Chow has directed episodes for quite a few illustrous tv/streaming shows, she worked on the Mandalorian, Better Call Saul, Fear The Walking Dead, American Gods, The Man in the High Castle, Mr. Robot and Vampire Diaries, to name a few. Hossein Amini is best known for writing the Ryan Gosling movie “Drive”, he also worked on “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “47 Ronin”. See the full story at the Hollywood Reporter.
There are some rumors circulating the internet that Lucasfilm may develop a Disney+ spin-off series based on Solo. Website Star Wars Unity has a story about an alleged Solo spin off that would continue some of the story threads of the movie. The rumor report says that any series based on Solo would most likely revolve around Crimson Dawn and not so much Han Solo, Chewbacca and Lando. Click through to read more!
Entertainment Weekly keeps covering the upcoming Mandalorian series on Disney+ with new photos and quotes by cast and crew. The latest photo shows the Mandalorian, a woman you saw in the trailer, when she held a child – her name is Omera – and Cara Dune, as they seem to enjoy a lovely and calm evening. Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive story on their website with one all new detail about the upcoming Mandalorian show on Disney+.
The show will explore the origins of the First Order! Now if that is just a side plot or a major plot element is unknown. What we do know is that remnants of Imperial forces are still around. Perhaps we will see how these remnants reform to become the First Order. Not all of the former Stormtroopers, Moffs and Governors became good citizens of the New Republic. So it seems The Mandalorian might bridge the original and the sequel trilogy and provide some much needed background and add some worldbuilding to the sequels.
Check out the EW website for their exclusive story and some quotes by Dave Filoni and Jon Favrau, which add some perspective to the First Order angle!
A brand new teaser poster for the upcoming Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian was revealed today on the official Star Wars site! Click on the image below to see the full poster!
So what do we see here? Is that Tatooine? Twin suns… sandcrawlers… moisture vaporators… the scenery sure looks very familiar. What can all of that mean? Will the show take us back to one of the most famous Star Wars locations? A Mandalorian trailer is also coming, we will certainly know a lot more very soon! We will keep you posted!
Since we all love rumors so much, here’s a report from website Cinelinx, which got the same info from two independent sources: apparently Ewan McGregor has signed a contract for an Obi-Wan series on Disney+. And yes, this is yet unverified, but this particular rumor, that Disney will produce an Obi-Wan series, has been circulating for a long time now, apparently production was set up already a while ago. This new story is widely reported by various news outlets tonight, but Cinelinx is the original source here, everyone else just quotes them.
If there will be an Obi-Wan series then we may expect Disney to announce something at D23. It is absolutely certain that there will be more live action Star Wars shows on Disney+, Obi-Wan would be a logical choice, since fans have been wanting to see Ewan McGregor to return as the Jedi master for a long time now. We’ll keep you posted! And with the Mandalorian and Cassian Andor it would be a good choice to have a show which features at least one Force user and lightsabers. Would you be looking forward to an Obi-Wan Series? And if you haven’t made up your mind yet about Disney Plus, would an announcement make you subscribe to the new streaming service?
While not directly related to toys or the upcoming The Rise of Skywalker, there are a few Disney news I thought are worth sharing.
