Jon Favreau loves to tease… and this time he posted a photo of an R5 unit from The Mandalorian on his Instagram!
I wonder if this could be R5-D4? Only with a functioning motivator this time? I compared the photo with my Bandai model kit of R5 and even with how R5 appeared in the movie and the color scheme seems to be identical, however this R5 unit appears to show some more wear and tear than the R5 we meet in A New Hope. But it’s many years later, so who knows what he went through. Maybe some droid experts out there can shed some more light on it. Anyway, it’s photos like these that build up anticipation for the show!

Website adage.com lists companies that are known to have booked airtime for the upcoming Super Bowl in February. And one entry is quite interesting. Filed unter “entertainment” the website says: “Walt Disney will air an undisclosed number of spots in the game.” With no further details, while all the other entries have detailed info on who made the spot and even some basic details about the spot.
What is it that Walt Disney could possibly air? Ok, there are upcoming Marvel movies, but we’ve had trailers for them already. Maybe there will be some last minute marketing for the Captain Marvel movie, which is released in March? But why keep that a secret? Or maybe, just maybe, we will get to see a first teaser for Episode IX, arguably the most important Disney movie in 2019? I believe the Super Bowl would be the perfect time to release the Episode IX teaser. We’ll know very soon!

Lately I’ve been thinking about the future of Star Wars, both as a whole and more particular as something that makes people buy action figures. The ultimate question is: will Star Wars either fade away, become less significant once the people who grew up with the original and prequel trilogy move on, or will Star Wars find new love and enthusiasm in a new generation, despite a much more competitive environment than we had 20 or 40 years ago? Click through for some musings and for which I hope will launch a fruitful discussion about the future of Star Wars!

We have a sneak peek for you tonight of the first wave of Star Wars: Resistance figures. As I opened up, inspected, played with and photographed these figures, I couldn’t help but wonder if The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi were made of up of realistic versions of these animated characters if it the films wouldn’t be so heavily panned by the longtime facet of collectors and collectors would be more engaged with Hasbro. The Star Wars [Resistance] Hasbro line has the potential to feel like the first couple of waves of the original vintage Kenner line. From the bright colors to the excellent sculpts, Hasbro has employed their fair share of creativity skills to design a line that SHOULD appeal to collectors of all ages. There is a HEALTHY balance of male, female and trooper characters, and droids and creatures soon will follow.
Sadly, I don’t think this line will take off or be successful which I sincerely feel is a shame. I have yet to watch any episodes myself, but I don’t believe the collecting audience Hasbro has for Disney-era Star Wars Entertainment will support this line the way it needs. The show looks good to me, but like so may other longtime Star Wars fans, it’s hard to stay engaged with so much turmoil in the community and hobby. Hopefully, I am wrong about this. Anyway, check out the first wave of figures. Reviews for this line begin in the New Year. Special thanks to friend Russ T. for securing these figures for me so that I can feature them here for you.

New Year’s Eve could be a bit less celebratory for Verizon Fios TV subscribers if the pay-TV provider doesn’t come to an agreement with Disney. The two media companies are negotiating a new contract to keep Disney’s channels including ESPN, Disney Channel and ABC stations in New York and Philadelphia among subscribers’ channel choices. But the current contract expires Dec. 31 and both sides are currently playing hard to please. USA Today has the details.

US toy company Mattel suffered quite a loss earlier this week. Warner Brothers decided not to extend the DC Comics boys’ action toys license with Mattel and instead gave the license to Canadian toy manufacturer Spin Master, beginning in 2020. Spin Master is a much smaller company compared to Mattel, their revenue in 2017 was 1.55 billion USD compared to Mattel’s 4.88 billion USD (Hasbro made 5.21 billion USD). You may know Spin Master from toys such as Air Hogs (there were a few Star Wars Air Hogs) and the more recent Hatchimals. Now, why exactly is Mattel losing most of its DC Comics license news on a Star Wars website? Let’s click through for a discussion and also for some speculation!

The official Star Wars website announced the composer for the upcoming Disney+ series The Mandalorian earlier today. And his name is Ludwig Göransson. The Swede is known for composing the Black Panther soundtrack (The Mandalorian sure has a few people from Marvel on the team now), he also composed the soundtracks to the Rocky spin-offs Creed I+II, and most recently you could hear his work in the movie Venom. His TV resume includes Community, New Girl and Happy Endings. Göransson is also a producer for Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) for which he received three Grammy nominations. Thanks to Martin M. for the alert!

Chinese factory workers producing toys for Hasbro, Disney, Lego and Mattel and are being subjected to “nightmare” working conditions in the run-up to Christmas, an investigation has alleged.
The report, titled “A Nightmare for Workers,” shows findings from campaign groups China Labor Watch, ActionAid, CiR, and Solidar Suisse, who sent undercover investigators to four factories that produced toys sold at Walmart, Costco, Target and other international retailers. (more….)
