Now that will shake things up for Star Wars gamers quite a bit! After years of exclusivity EA will lose its exclusive license! EA will continue developing Star Wars games, but Ubisoft will now develop an open world Star Wars game. So I suppose we can expect something in the vein of Assassin’s Creed or Watch Dogs to come to Star Wars. The new game will be developed with the help of Lucasfilm Games! Nothing else is really known about the game, but more details will certainly follow!
So, what do you think about this big news for Star Wars games? EA has a mixed track record when it comes to Star Wars games, Fallen Order received praise, but its game mechanics felt somewhat outdated and it was not an open world game, EA scrapped various open world games in the past and was unwilling to develop a huge open world game for Star Wars. Now it seems Lucasfilm finally wants a piece of the open world (single player) gaming market, a genre that is still immensenly popular despite EA’s statements from a few years ago that people no longer like these kind of games. Red Dead Redemption 2m Ghost of Tsushima or even the somewhat maligned Cyberpunk 2077, plus all the Assassin’s Creed titles etc prove that there is much demand for open world games. Of course it’s also possible, that the open world game will be an online game, i.e. without a real offline single player campaign, the exact wording Ubisoft uses is “story driven open world game”. We will have to wait for more details to emerge!
I have a custom clone to share with you this week. Perfect, since we’ve reached the 66th TRT. I also got a new figure in the mail and it’s one of my favorites since TVC was relaunched. Click here to check them out!
Check out the new trailer for the upcoming space combat game Star Wars: Squadrons, due out October 2nd.
[UPDATED] Info about retail price added
With a trailer coming on Monday, EA teases Star Wars Squadrons. Tune in on Monday, June 15 at 11 AM Eastern to check it out!
Respawn Entertainment (developer of Titanfall, owned by EA) finally revealed a trailer for the upcoming Star Wars Game Jedi: Fallen Order, in which you play an Order 66 survivor, a young male Padawan named Cal Kestis, who tries to blend in. Barriss Offee is supposed to be featured in the game as well. It was already revealed yesterday that the game will be single player only and that there won’t be any microtransactions. So fans of story based games may finally get something from EA. The game has a release date of November 15th. There’s one thing however which raises eyebrows. Respawn merely released a story trailer, no actual gameplay footage was shown. Mere seven months before release you would think they have at least something to show. That they didn’t present any gameplay at all should make fans somewhat wary.
Maybe the game will once more be developed in typical EA fashion: big crunch time towards the end where the devs will code 24/7, six months straight, with the game still not really finished on release date and needing several patches post release. Let’s hope the game will actually be finished and more or less bug-free when it is released in November!
Also revealed earlier today on the Star Wars Show Live (around the 5 hour 4 minute mark) was the following: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will have NO microtransactions and NO multiplayer, it will strictly be a story focused single player game. The statement was made by Vince Zampalla, head of Respawn Entertainment, who develop the game. I suppose this news is something that should elate all gamers who have been asking for something like that for years now. Maybe EA have learned their lesson not just with Battlefront II, but also with missteps like Anthem. More details about Fallen Order will be revealed on Saturday, so stay tuned! But this news alone makes me a lot more excited for it.
In case you’ve forgotten it, this year we’ll not only get a new Star Wars movie, but there’s also a new Star Wars game in development, which is supposed to be released in late 2019. EA is not the most popular video game company (and I am being nice here), but after several cancelled story based Star Wars games “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” will most likely see the light of day. Amazon is already listing “The Art of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” book on their page. And they even updated the page and added a cover graphic for the book. So what you see below is apparently the official logo of the game. It’s in line with the movies and previous EA games. However, this will be the first Star Wars game developed by EA which actually focuses on story. You will play as an Order 66 survivor, a few years after the events of Revenge of the Sith. And remember, the game will be canon. I am curious what they come up with and somewhat excited for this game. Let’s hope it will give us a worthy successor to games like KOTOR and won’t be yet another cash grab and lootbox travesty. EA needs some good press for a change, especially following games such as Anthem.
According to Kotaku EA just cancelled its single player open world Star Wars game which was in development at EA Vancouver since late 2017. EA had cancelled a previous iteration of a single player Star Wars game before when Visceral Games was closed. This is the second time now a single player (and open world) Star Wars game is nixed by EA.
EA went on record previously that they don’t really like open world (single player) games and prefer games as a service (i.e. Battlefront II that encourages you to pay a lot of money on top of what you pay for the initial game). So it seems that Star Wars will have to wait much, much longer before fans can have their Star Wars version of Red Dead Redemption 2, Spider-Man or God of War. Open world single player games that did incredibly well in 2018 and broke several records.
Jedi: Fallen Order is still in development though and is supposed to be a single player game. But probably not open world and much more linear. Not much is known about the project.
My comment is that I wish Disney would give the Star Wars games license to any other publisher. What do you think about all this? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
The Verge reports that a new Star Wars game was announced earlier today at E3. The game is titled “Jedi: Fallen Order” and is developed by Respawn (they also made the Titanfall games). Respawn was acquired by EA in December 2017. This will be their first Star Wars game. Click through for a few more details!
It seems that anything online (and in a social type of setting) is harmful to your mental health anymore. Forbes posted a fantastic recent article outlining six ways that social media is affecting the mental health of those who constantly utilize it, and with really no surprise, EA is in the middle of a controversy that there new Star Wars game was really just gambling masked in Star Wars which is all social media based. We’re beginning to believe that people should probably step away from these social media outlets and related things. What we have all personally witnessed online and they affects they’ve clearly had on people are frightening. And now it’s starting to affect younger minds. It’s time to get the kids (as well as the rest of us) outside and in the fresh air again. Anyway, check out the article on EA at CNBC.com. It’s another frightening example of what can happen in the social media/gaming arena. Remember how hard it was to give up Candy Crush? It seems things are headed in the right direction for EA, but it’s scary to think what might have been.

Good news, everyone! In case you missed the Battlefront II beta or if you just can’t get enough of it, EA has extended the beta’s availability until October 11th. The event was supposed to end today, but this extension gives fans two more days of gameplay. If you haven’t played the beta yet, what are you waiting for? It’s a blast!
Earlier this month, StarWars.com announced an upcoming mobile strategy game from Lucasfilm and EA . It’s still extremely early and very few details have been made available. Personally, I really enjoyed the MMORPG Star Wars: Uprising and the accompanying canon story line that followed ROTJ, but this will be a much different game. I have just received my pre-Alpha invitation so I will be providing more details about it soon enough so stay tuned!
EA has released a new trailer that features gameplay from the Starfighter Assault game mode in Battlefront II. The gameplay shown in the trailer spans every era and revealed new locations including Ryloth. Listen closely to the Ryloth portion of the footage, that sounds a lot like Matt Lanter and Ashley Eckstein to me. Could Anakin and Ahoska be among the playable heroes in Battlefront II? Check out the trailer!
Over the weekend, EA released a new video that offered a behind the scenes look at the story of Battlefront II. The video also introduces the members of Inferno Squad and features gameplay from the campaign. Check it out! Full Story
