Welcome to another entry in our The Vintage Collection: The Ninety Six column. Hasbro recently committed to collectors that they will be “focusing” on characters in The Vintage Collection that fall under “The Ninety Six” banner. If you’re new to this, it means that there needs a modern counterpart for every classic Kenner figure. Between 2020 and 2021, Hasbro’s made an admirable effort by focusing on these characters. But there is more work to be done, and we’ll figure out where we are step by step. Today we assess The Emperor.
Why did Hasbro choose to go with this portrait in the Emperor’s Throne Room Hasbro Pulse exclusive? This set is also a bit of a letdown. (more….)
JTA reader Sergio R. from Mexico sends us some quick pic images of the Hasbro Pulse exclusive The Vintage Collection Emperor’s Throne Room playset with the new Emperor Palpatine figure (new portrait). Check it out, then let us know what you think in the comments!.
Emperor Palpatine is finally here, and the figure is VC200 in the TVC lineup. Hasbro only made us wait nearly four decades before adding the Original Trilogy version of The Emperor into our modern collections on a vintage-style Kenner card. To our surprise, the figure is 90% reused. It only has a new head, a new belt, and new soft goods. But it’s mostly based on a 2012 The Vintage Collection figure. Despite this slight disappointment, we are more excited that we finally have this figure in TVC. (more….)

SH.Figuarts have revealed two all-new Star Wars figures. One of them is actually not just a figure, but a set. First there is the Mandalorian, as you have seen him for about 10 minutes in the show before he gets his first piece of new armor. He comes with a cloth cape, looks very crisp, as usual, but maybe his helmet is somewhat too small, which is a common issue with many helmeted SHF figures.
And then there is the set with Emperor Palpatine from Return of the Jedi. In the set, you will get the Emperor, two Royal Guards (that are basically just statues), and of course, you get his throne. The Emperor comes with several extra pieces and bits. Including alternate heads, hands, Force lightning, and alternate legs and robes so he can sit on his throne. While the Mandalorian is a regular release, the set with the Emperor is a web exclusive and it will cost around $180. Going by the photos released by SHF the likeness is maybe not the best. The Emperor also seems to be a bit tall in the comparison photo with Vader (and Vader’s height is pretty accurate).
Both figures are expected to be released in May 2020. Pre-orders go live on Friday, November 22nd. If you want the Emperor you get a pre-order window. Everyone who wants a figure will get one. This is how the Bandai web exclusives work, figures are made to order. However, if you miss the pre-order window you will have to pay a lot on the aftermarket once the figure is released. Check out more photos on the SHF homepage!
Will you add these two figures to your collection?

Hasbro, if you don’t MILK the appearance of Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker for an opportunity to bring The Vintage Collection collectors a super-articulated 3.75″ action figure of Emperor Palpatine, it may go down as one of the biggest mistakes of your career developing toys for the Star Wars brand license. Now, we know you’d likely be tempted to release it on a TROS card back, but we’re sorry to inform you it would have to go on a Return Of The Jedi card back so we can check off one of the Kenner original 92. Thank you. (Feel free to release a second version in a box with a throne too.)
A user on Reddit found out an interesting detail about the newly released The Rise of Skywalker teaser poster. The shadowy image of Emperor Palpatine is not a photo of actor Ian McDiarmid in makeup! Instead the artist(s) who created the poster used a Hot Toys figure of Emperor Palpatine! Is that a first that an official Star Wars movie poster uses an action figure instead of the actual character? Are there no decent promo photos of Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker? Either way this is certainly flattering for Hot Toys. Lucasfilm must have thought that the figure looks so convincing that it can stand in for the real character. However, several people had remarked – before it was known that a figure was used – that something seems to be off about Palpatine in the poster. At least now we know why.
UK etailer Robot Kingdom has apparently begun to ship the Amazon USA exclusive Emperor Palpatine with Throne Black Series set. JTA regular Matthew Cohen found the photos in a Facebook group and sent them to us. Thanks for that! So click through for a few in hand photos of the all new Emperor with his throne!
