Welcome to another entry in our The Vintage Collection: The Ninety Six column. Hasbro recently committed to collectors that they will be “focusing” on characters in The Vintage Collection that fall under “The Ninety Six” banner. If you’re new to this, it means that there needs a modern counterpart for every classic Kenner figure. Between 2020 and 2021, Hasbro’s made an admirable effort by focusing on these characters. But there is more work to be done, and we’ll figure out where we are step by step. Today we assess AT-ST Driver.

The second wave of The Vintage Collection Lucasfilm 50th Anniversary 3.75-inch figures are arriving from Walmart, and we’re getting many reports that they’ve continued to ship them one per box or envelope. And the envelopes are sometimes padded, and others times not. How do they afford all of these shipping costs? (Mine arrived one per box and envelope too, and the ones in the envelope were in better condition than those shipped in a box! Special thanks to JTA readers Ken P. and Matt R. for the images!

If you’re still desperate to find the Lucasfilm 50th The Vintage Collection exclusives at Walmart, the kicker display is still showing up. JTA reader Jaret just found it today in Tulsa, OK. What a shame that Hasbro and Walmart treated these exclusives so terribly. We should probably expect the same for the next wave.

The Vintage Collection AT-ST Driver figure I was missing from my original pre-order from Walmart arrived today out of the blue. And, once again, came in a bubble-mailer all by itself. When I opened the package, I was quite tickled by its condition. (There is no point in getting upset anymore.) Thank goodness I didn’t open my other three that are folded in half since their condition is much better! That said, this arrival served as a metaphor for me for how I feel about collecting, where Hasbro is with the TVC toy line, and where Disney Star Wars is with its audience. Let’s all “fake” celebrate the five-decade landmark, OK?! How can an action figure arrive already in a position to man an Imperial AT-ST Walker while still inside of the packaging? But my figure did! I get that the recently revealed Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars action figures for The Vintage Collection are getting a mixed reception from collectors. Still, for me, this is some of the most exciting news in recent memory as a Star Wars collector, and that’s with me accepting they’re imperfect. (more….)
