We previously reported on an upcoming Marvel comic series featuring Captain Phasma and there is also a new Phasma novel due out on Sept 1st. This seems to be an awful lot of story coming for a character who had nearly as much screen time as the Nightwatcher Worm, but she is supposed to be utilized much more in The Last Jedi and both Gwendoline Christie and Rian Johnson have seen to that by creating her new backstory. More after the jump.
Gwendoline Christie recently sat down with IGN for an interview where she revealed some interesting information about her character.
“Rian and I did have long conversations about this character and who she was, and I was utterly delighted in how willing he was to listen to my ideas and really thrilled to exchange them with him and hear his. He really is a master writer and director, and I think we’ve seen that in the films that he’s made but I think that we truly will see that in the depths to which he goes in The Last Jedi.” -Gwendoline Christie
There has been constant talk since the end of The Force Awakens that Captain Phasma would make a return and be utilized much more. Even at the D23 Expo, John Boyega made some remarks about coming face-to-face with a formidable opponent which prompted Gwendoline to get up close and in John’s face. So, it is very likely we will see them meet once more. Gwendoline also remarked about Phasma’s place in Star Wars history outside of the films and her use in other material.
“It fascinates me to be involved in something that also resonates in other incarnations of books or of merchandise, whatever it is, because people are connecting with the material that’s outside just literally watching it. They’re connecting with it in a way that’s tactile, that’s in their lives, that stimulates different parts of their brain, different part of their soul.” -Christie
Be sure to check out the rest of the IGN interview with Gwendoline.
I’d really like to see Phasma get used more than she was, but I also hope they don’t simply roll past the fact that she lowered the shield to Starkiller Base. She has so much potential as a character and I am very interested in seeing where they took her backstory and where they take her in the future. What are your thoughts on Capt. Phasma? Would you like to see more or do you think they should’ve just ended her in the trash compactor? Sound off in the comments section.
