This Is It? This Is All The 40th Anniversary Of Star Wars Gets?

Is this how the 40th anniversary celebration dies? With thunderous lackluster products? It’s hard to believe we’re already beyond the first week in November and that we’re just moments from reaching the holiday season once again. What’s more difficult to believe than this is what we received in the form of Star Wars merchandise to celebrate the monumental and once in a lifetime celebration of the 40th anniversary of Star Wars. (more….)

Sure. There were nods celebrating the 40th anniversary of Star Wars this year. The Black Series 6″ collectors received a nice collection of old and new figures in new vintage Kenner-inspired packaging, and they were all huge hits. We received Titanium Series 3.75″ figures with 40th anniversary stickers on them. While most of us are Hasbro-focused, we would be remiss to neglect to mention all of the fantastic stuff Funko made to celebrate this four-decade accomplishment.

Maybe the Sequel Trilogy came at a bad time. Who knows anymore? We do however know that when it comes to collecting toys, our spirits are left feeling flat. Hasbro has dropped hints that 3.75″ super-articulated collectors could possibly expect action figures in The Vintage Collection based on A New Hope, and it’s our hope they follow through with this. 2018 is a year of significance. It’s 40 years after Kenner launched the original Star Wars toy line. So hopefully the celebration will hit full throttle next year. We’re keeping you accountable to this, Hasbro!

Even Sideshow Collectibles, LEGO and Gentle Giant did very little to celebrate this event.

Hasbro told us at Toy Fair this year that the 40th Anniversary of Star Wars would be a story with a beginning, middle and an end. From where we sit, we’re waiting for the beginning to…. begin.

I understand Star Wars is being experienced now in a different place and time. But when it comes to collecting, it just feels we’re worlds away from where we should be. Anyway, please leave your thoughts in the comments about how you’ve seen the 40th anniversary of Star Wars, what you hope to see between now and next year, and if you believe that our hobby will ever get fully back on track to the Golden Age of collecting.
