Luke’s appearance on Crait is one of the touching moments of The Last Jedi. Luke gets a chance to say farewell to Leia. And then walks out to confront the First Order and Kylo Ren. But isn’t there something missing? Yes, there is. Click here to find out what is missing!
The original The Last Jedi script had Luke walk out of the base after giving his farewells to Leia, just like that. But then Mark Hamill realised something on set. What about C-3PO who is clearly standing there in the corner? He’s hard to overlook, all golden and shiny.
Mark Hamill had an idea and spoke to Rian Johnson. This is what Mark said in his recent interview with Entertainment Tonight:
Initially, I didn’t acknowledge Threepio, I walked right past him. I said, ‘Rian, look it, after all those years of service, even though we haven’t been in contact in recent years, Threepio was the closest to a sidekick I had. Harrison had Chewie and I had Artoo and Threepio, but [Rian’s] so accommodating and so collaborative. He said, ‘Oh, absolutely, you should go over there.’ We didn’t really have time to script anything, just to acknowledge him, and that’s what I did.
So, Star Wars fan Rian Johnson, director and script writer of The Last Jedi completely forgot about C-3PO and Luke somehow acknowledging him. Had it not been for Mark Hamill’s on set improvisation we would have had a scene similar to The Force Awakens where Leia completely ignores Chewbacca to embrace that unknown woman she’s never met before.
Rian Johnson clearly didn’t have C-3PO on his radar when he wrote that scene. Make of that what you will. I find it odd. Any Star Wars fan would know that C-3PO and Luke have a history and that Luke would always at least acknowledge C-3PO. It’s sad that there was no time to change the script a little bit and add some dialogue. At least we got that wink because Mark Hamill didn’t forget that C-3PO is not just any other droid to Luke.
