Variety put their Solo cover story online earlier today. It’s a behind the scenes report about the troubled production of the movie. Not that many entirely new things can be learned from the article, but one detail is noteworthy. Click through for more details!
Apparently Solo, thanks to the extensive reshoots, cost more money to make than The Force Awakens. Solo’s budget is said to be $250 million – TFA had a budget of $245 million. That is a lot of money for a supposedly smaller stand alone movie. Solo will have to make a lot of money to turn in a profit for Disney. Projections say that Solo could have a $130 million – $170 million Memorial Day opening weekend. So it’s very likely that Solo will be profitable, especially when you also consider global box office, even if the studio’s share is smaller for non-domestic box office.
One other thing is of note: the comments underneath the Variety article are mostly negative. It seems The Last Jedi is not forgotten yet and some fans are still angry or at least wary.
With only two more days to go until the USA premiere (and with the movie opening in less than 24 hours from now in other parts of the world) what are your feelings? Will you join the boycot movement and stay away from Solo? Or will you give the movie a chance? The trailers are fun. Early reviews are mostly positive, but aggregate critics scores are lower than for any other Disney Star Wars movie so far. Only Attack of the Clones and The Phantom Menace have lower scores on Rotten Tomatoes. It won’t be long now before fans worldwide can finally form their own opinion. It will be an exciting weekend for Lucasfilm and Star Wars fans. One that could potentially shape the future of the franchise as a whole.
