JTA Presents: Evolutions - Rose Tico (Resistance Tech)

Welcome to another one of our JTA Presents: Evolutions features! Let’s check out how close or far we are from having an ideal Hasbro 3.75″ Rose Tico (Resistance Tech) action figure. Have we arrived at definitive status yet? Weigh in and let us know what conclusion you’ll come to by clicking through and adding your two cents in the comments!

Rose Tico (Resistance Tech)

It’s Valentine’s Day! So we’d thought we’d play along with Entertainment Earth’s Rose Tico Valentine’s Day promotion. Rose Tico (Resistance Tech) got a bad rap. Aside from a few disappointing lines and interfering with Finn’s sacrifice for the greater good, she was one of the most significant new characters introduced in The Last Jedi. We had high hopes for her before the film was released, and we’re glad she met most of our expectations after its release. She was a focal point for the Star Wars toy line, and we got multiple versions of her in a short time. Interestingly, most collectors feel that the “inferior” version of her is the better of the two 3.75” figures produced. Let’s find out more.

Resistance Tech Rose from 2017’s Star Wars [The Last Jedi] line.

The Star Wars [The Last Jedi] Resistance Tech Rose Force Link figure is a beautiful action figure. The head sculpt is accurate to actress Kelly Marie Tran, and the silhouette of her jumpsuit perfectly imitates the frumpiness we saw in the film. With a shorter stature and a rather bland outfit coloring, no one could complain about how well the figure turns out. The figure didn’t sell that well overall, and she’s one of the first peg-warmers of the line you’ll still find at retail, but Hasbro did a fantastic job creating this figure. The facial paint operations are especially done well, whereas the super-articulated version seems to have more going against it than this version.

Resistance Tech Rose from 2017’s The Black Series [Phase III] 3.75″ line.

The Black Series [Phase III] 3.75″ Resistance Tech Rose is bittersweet. It has all of the articulation 3.75” fans desire and love, but the figure also falls short in a few ways. Her face sculpt is probably done very well, but you’ll never tell from the paint operations. This version of Resistance Tech Rose is too manly and angry looking. Rose is lovely and this, action figure doesn’t do the actress much justice at all. Also, due to the super-articulation, her cod section is shaped oddly and doesn’t look nearly as good as the 5POA version. The question is if we need Hasbro to revisit this character in this outfit in any format again? Due to her poor performance at retail, we probably have all of the versions of this character we need. That’s a disappointment because we believe that “photorealistic” technology would do this sculpt justice.

Questions for discussion:

1. In your opinion, do we have a definitive version of this figure?

2. If we don’t have a definitive version of this figure, should Hasbro tool a new figure from the ground up again, or should they tweak a current sculpt to perfect it instead?

3. If the figure ranks as definitive for you, do you want to see it repackaged in vintage Kenner packaging (The Vintage Collection) if it isn’t already?

4. Add any other points of note or interest in the comments about any of these versions of Rose Tico (Resistance Tech) action figures.
