The Hollywood Reporter broke the very surprising news a few hours ago: Kevin Feige will develop a new Star Wars movie with Kathleen Kennedy!
According to a top Disney source that spoke to the Hollywood Reporter Kathleen Kennedy “remains in charge with no plans for any changes”.
Yet, the question needs to be asked how the public will perceive this move, when the studio head of Marvel has to lend his help in developing a new Star Wars movie at Lucasfilm, which – until now – was supposed to be the job of Kathleen Kennedy and her new second in command Michelle Rejwan?
It’s certainly a clever move by Disney to get the best people possible for the job. Under Feige Marvel has become a global powerhouse with universal appeal, something Star Wars most certainly desperately needs now, especially in light of disappointing box office results in much of Asia, including China.
No specifics are known at this time. The Hollywood Reporter merely mentions that Feige already has an actor in mind for a major role, but no name was given. It is also unknown what impact Kevin Feige’s Star Wars movie will have on the Benioff & Weiss and/or Rian Johnson project. Also, despite what the top Disney source told the Hollywood Reporter, can this move be considered a “vote of no confidence” for Kathleen Kennedy by Disney? It can certainly be seen this way. Under Kennedy the movies did get make good money, but production was troubled for at least two movies, Last Jedi may have gone seriously over budget and Solo outright flopped. All the while Asia turned a cold shoulder towards Star Wars, with each movie making less money than before, which is certainly nothing Disney likes to see.
So, what are your thoughts here? Do you welcome the decision to get the Marvel studio head on board to develop a new Star Wars movie? Are you excited? Or do you think it’s a sign of sheer desperation? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
