The Rise of Skywalker was nominated for three Academy Awards! Click through for all the details!
The Rise of Skywalker was nominated in three categories.
This is John Williams’ 52nd nomination for an Academy Award! His last win is from 1993 for Schindler’s List. The other nominees are Randy Newman (Marriage Story), Thomas Newman (1917), Hildur Guðnadóttir (Joker) and Alexandre Desplat (Little Women).
In the Sound Editing category The Rise of Skywalker goes up against 1917, Joker, Ford v. Ferrari and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
And 1917, The Lion King, Avengers Endgame and The Irishman all want a Visual Effects Oscar as well. Once more, I don’t think The Rise of Skywalker was anything special, but then again, it’s very difficult to offer anything special at all in this day and age where CGI is ubiquitous and just more of the same in almost any movie.
My prediction is that The Rise of Skywalker will not win in any of the categories. I feel Hildur Guðnadóttir, the only female composer among the nominees, may win in the Original Score category. I really don’t think the score for The Rise of Skywalker was anything special and Joker may be the Academy darling this year. Lion King or Endgame will win the Visual Effects Oscar. I know too little about sound editing, I believe much depends on momentum this year. Either Joker will sweep the Oscars (the movie has 11 nominations) or the Academy will distribute the Awards more evenly among the nominees.
In the past few years most Best Picture Oscar winners were niche movies that hardly anyone saw in theaters. Joker would be a hit movie again for a change. We’ll see!
A few Star Wars alumni received nomations this year!
Adam Driver received a Best Actor nomination for “Marriage Story”. But I think Joaquin Phoenix as Joker may be difficult to beat this year, if the Academy will treat a “comic book” movie seriously for a change.
Taika Waititi has a nomintion for Best Adapted Screenplay (JoJo Rabbit). But maybe the award will go to the only female nominee, Greta Gerwig (Little Women), to make up for the fact that she was not nominated for Best Director. He’s also nominated for Best Picture (the producers are listed in this category!). But I think JoJo Rabbit has zero chances in this category.
And everyone’s most favorite Star Wars director Rian Johnson also received his first ever nomination! Best Original Screenplay for Knives Out! That movie is one of the few really positive surprises at the box office, it made a lot more money than originally expected. In fact, Knives Out is more profitable than The Rise of Skywalker even. The other nominees are Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon A Time In Hollywood), Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story), Sam Mendes & Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917) and Bong Joon Ho & Jin Won Han (Parasite). I don’t think he will win, don’t ask me how or why, but I think Parasite may win.
