Today Disney announced that several of their upcoming tentpole movies will be delayed for a full year. Click through for the details!
The movie industry is still in pandemic mode and probably will be for a few more months. Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” was delayed yet again a few days ago, this time no release date was given. The Bill & Ted sequel will now release on digital platforms in the USA. Disney followed the string of announcements by Hollywood studios today and delayed the upcoming Mulan movie yet again as well, no release date was given this time. But that’s not all.
Avatar 2 will open in December 2022 now. And that leaves Star Wars. The new movie will now be released in December 2023. This will certainly have a huge impact on Hasbro and collectors. It means Hasbro will now have even more time to release figures from previous entertainment, and they can also focus much more on the Disney+ shows.
It is certainly no surprise that the Star Wars movie is delayed. A December 2022 release date would have meant that work on the movie would need to begin about now, that means casting and pre-production. That gives Lucasfilm even more time now to find a good script and director. Also, with no word about Indiana Jones, the current situation in Hollywood and given Harrison Ford’s age it’s probably safe to say that Indiana Jones 5 will never see the light of day. It is probably for the better.
Without the exposure that comes with new movies merchandise sales may decline, unless the upcoming Disney+ shows all have their “Baby Yoda” moment.
So, what do you think? Are you disappointed that you have to wait one more year now until you can see a new Star Wars movie? Or do you think the franchise may benefit from it, because in 2023 people may have almost forgotten the sequels and be ready for new adventures in a galaxy, far far away?
