Funko released their Q4 2020 earnings report yesterday. Net sales for the full year are down compared to 2019 for apparent reasons, however, Q4 earnings were up year over year. Also, sales for Funko Pops grew in 2020 by 1% worldwide and 12% in the US. Funko’s domestic US sales were the strongest yet, however the pandemic did affect global sales. But let’s not dwell on the numbers too much. More interesting is what Funko’s bestsellers were. Contrary to many other toy companies Funko do provide a detailed breakdown of their top selling licenses in their earnings presentation. And here it is more good news for Star Wars toy sales! Click through for more details!
The Mandalorian is now Funko’s best selling license for a 3rd quarter in a row. A feat no other license has achieved yet for as long Funko have released their data on top selling licenses.
As you can see Star Wars / The Mandalorian have topped Funko’s top properties all throughout 2020, something no other license has managed in the past few years. This is once more clear evidence of the enormous commercial draw of The Mandalorian and a huge comback for the Star Wars brand ever since the 2018 alltime low. Let’s also not forget that Hasbro reported a whopping 70% growth of their Star Wars toy sales for 2020. Something Lucasfilm, Disney and especially their shareholders should maybe pay close attention to.
Star Wars was in a good place all throughout 2020, but it remains to be seen if and how the recent Gina Carano controversy and the marketing push for High Republic content will affect Star Wars toy sales. I doubt Funko will release High Republic Pops anytime soon. However, in May Bad Batch will begin streaming on Disney+ and chances are Funko have something in store for the show.
What else can be said? Harry Potter’s ongoing popularity is clear evidence that it has become an evergreen brand, despite any new content Harry, Hermione, Ron & friends remain immensely popular.
