“Rangers Of The New Republic” was announced last year alongside multiple other Star Wars projects. Not much is known about the series, other than that it’s a Mandalorian spin-off, just like “Ahsoka”. But then Mandalorian star Gina Carano was fired by Lucasfilm earlier this year and that has apparently thrown a wrench into the works. Click through for the full story!
Trade magazine Variety buried the news deep in an article about Dave Filoni’s promotion (which actually happened back in the summer of 2020) a few days ago. “Rangers Of The New Repubic” is “no longer in active development” at Lucasfilm.
The reason the series was put on hold is pretty obvious, when Lucasfilm fired Carano the series lost its star. It seems Gina Carano’s Instagram post that resulted in her termination at Lucasfilm was very costly, not just for Carano who had a long career in Star Wars ahead of her, but also for Lucasfilm who now have less content in development for a streaming service that very much needs new and exclusive content.
But maybe not all is lost for Carano fans, according to extremely unverified rumors (read: YouTube, so please take several tons of salt with this) Jon Favreau is still trying to get Gina Carano back behind the scenes. Variety’s choice of words is certainly interesting, they don’t say the series has been cancelled, just that it is not in active development. It could mean the show will be retooled at a later time or it could mean people are just waiting to see what will happen later this year when Kathleen Kennedy’s contract with Lucasfilm expires and needs to be renewed. So far there has been no announcement by Disney about Kennedy’s new contract. It would not be too surprising if plans for upcoming Star Wars series and movies would change quite a bit should Lucasfilm eventually have a new leadership.
Would you still like to see a “Rangers Of The New Republic” series with Gina Carano? Or do you think it’s actually better we probably won’t get this Mandalorian spin-off?
