Rey Returns To Star Wars! Three New Star Wars Movies Announced At Star Wars Celebration!

Earlier today Kathleen Kennedy announced three all new movies at Star Wars Celebration… yet again. But the movies she did announce will make waves! Daisy Ridley will return to Star Wars as Rey in the movie that was originally meant to be written by Damon Lindelof, who exited the project. Steven Knight is still meant to write the Rey movie, with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a two time Academy Award winning documentary filmmaker who also directed two Ms Marvel episodes, in the director’s chair!

But it does not stop there! Two more movies were announced! And one of them will be directed by Dave Filoni and is meant to be an epic crossover Mandoverse event movie! Click through for more!

She’s back!

Ok, let’s talk about the other two movies first!

Dave Filoni will direct a Mandoverse event movie set in the New Republic Mandalorian timeline, it is supposed to be a crossover event movie culminating in an epic battle and bringing together various plot points from all the different Mandoverse series. Whether or not this would herald the end of the shows or merely be the start of a new phase is yet unknown. This would be Filoni’s debut as live action movie director, he has directed several live action episodes before of course. Jon Favreau is listed as a producer here.

The other movie is set in the distant past, at the dawn of the Jedi and is directed by James Mangold, the director of the upcoming Indiana Jones movie “The Dial of Destiny”.

But the biggest waves will certainly be made by the Rey movie. It puts the nail in the coffin of various fan favorite YouTube theories, such as that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni will retcon the sequels in Ahsoka. It was always clear that Disney would not give up on the sequels just like that, they invested literal billions into the sequel timeline and the characters, the theme parks and the hotel are deeply rooted in the sequels, so Disney always had to try and salvage it.

It is now becoming more apparent why Lindelof may have exited the project because credible leaks had two very different actors originally attached to the project, indicating that Lindelof did not want to make a Rey movie at all. But apparently Lucasfilm had different plans and Lindelof made his exit.

In my opinion Rey could perhaps be salvaged from the sequels wreckage. People like Daisy Ridley well enough and she has the charm. But the big question is if people will accept Rey Palpatine doing what Luke Skywalker was meant to do: establish the new Jedi Order. Luke utterly failed here, as we all remember. But a genius writer with a really great script could maybe bring her back from the abyss. Still, it’s a veritable risk.

Also: it has to be noted that not one word was breathed about Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie.

And finally: given Lucasfilm’s track record we need to wait and see if any of the announced projects today will ever truly materialize. Especially the James Mangold movie may be heavily dependent on how Indiana Jones 5 will perform, if that movie crashes and burns a Mangold helmed Star Wars movie may be in serious trouble.
