The Nielsen Streaming Charts For The Acolyte - Week 6

I’ll make it super quick. The Acolyte is not on the top 10 Nielsen Streaming charts, not in the overall top 10, not in the original series top 10, it’s nowhere to be found. In fact, a brand new Star Wars series with an all new episode is now even outperformed by a show which released its currently most recent episode two years ago. A job well done, Leslye Headland and Kathleen Kennedy! You really turned a once successful phenomenon on Disney+ into a bad joke no one is watching. This is with episode 7, the second flashback episode, added. Click through for a short discussion!

In search of the modern audience

Most successful original series is Amazon’s The Boys with 1,053 million minutes and the most watched acquired series is House of the Dragon with 1,273 million minutes. So genre shows are leaders of the pack. Genre is still popular, be it superheroes or fantasy.

But wait… The Acolyte is, among other things, outperformed by Stranger Things, which doesn’t even have any new episodes out (the latest episodes are from 2022), but the series entered the top 10 with 375 million minutes. So just let that sink in and think about it: a series which had its last new release in 2022 outperforms a brand new ongoing Star Wars show that cost 180+ million to make.

It’s just pitiful.

Disney has three shows and movies on the charts and one of them is Bluey which is not Disney’s IP even. With almost 55 million subscribers in the US and Canada. Exclusive Netflix content is found 11 times on the charts, if you add the acquired content that number rises to 17. And there is no hope for improvement for Disney, because Iger has considerably slowed down production of exclusive Disney+ content. There simply is nothing to turn the tides here. In the foreseeable future Disney+ will not have a Stranger Things, Squid Game, One Piece or Bridgerton. Not even a Yellowstone. And neither the upcoming Agatha After all Marvel series nor Skeleton Crew will be ratings hits. In fact, Star Wars will not have a single success on Disney+ for the next few years, at least until 2026 or 2027. Even Ahsoka’s season 1 just performed “ok” (with about 50% of what The Mandalorian had) and it’s unlikely season 2 will suddenly bring in Mandalorian numbers. And the ONE hit show they had has effectively been ended and will now live on as a movie, maybe a movie series if the first Mandalorian movie is a success. At this point Disney+ is only worth your money if you want easy access to all the old animated movies for the kids.

Just remember this: a brand new Star Wars series is outperformed by a show which aired its most current episode in the summer of 2022. People would rather watch Stranger Things for the n-th time than to bother with a brand new super expensive Star Wars series. Why does Kathleen Kennedy still have a job again?
