The Last Jedi Wins Big At 2018's Empire Awards

British magazine Empire held its Empire Awards ceremony last Sunday. The winners for each category are voted by the readers of the magazine.
And even though it is believed by some that 50% of the fans hate The Last Jedi, at least the British readers of Empire Magazine thought differently and the movie won a couple of awards. Which ones? Click here to find out more!

Empire Awards 2018

First of all, Mark Hamill won the honorary Empire Icon award. Congratulions Mark! After receiving a star on the Walk of Fame this is the second recognition for his work in the industry in short time.

The Last Jedi won the following awards: Best Film, Best Visual Effects and Best Costume Design.
On top of that Daisey Ridley won Best Actress for her role as Rey in The Last Jedi.
And finally, Rian Johnson won Best Director for The Last Jedi.
John Boyega was nominated for Best Actor, but lost to Hugh Jackman for his portrayal as Logan. I have to admit, I find it somewhat astounding that Boyega was even nominated for his role in The Last Jedi.

However, The Last Jedi lost Best SciFi / Fantasy to Wonder Woman. How The Last Jedi can be the best movie but not the best SciFi movie is kind of puzzling, especially since Wonder Woman was also nominated for Best Movie.

What is remarkable here is that the awards are voted by readers of the magazine, and therefore normal fans. So, in a way the Empire Awards are some kind of popularity contest. And even though many believe that Star Wars fans are divided 50/50 about The Last Jedi it seems that the vast majority of British fans at least do love the movie.
In my opinion, the win for Best Costume Design is questionable, though. Also, best Visual Effects feels somewhat undeserved. For some reason Blade Runner 2049 wasn’t even nominated in that category and The Last Jedi beat movies such as War for the Planet of the Apes.

So, what do you think? Are you surprised that the readers of Empire Magazine love The Last Jedi that much? Does it change your opinion about the backlash or divisive nature of the movie?

You can find the full list of winners at Empire Magazine’s website.
